Some additional information: apparently you have to get it fixed first, then ask for a refund. See:

.Defective ccd imager!! company will replace this ccd imager free of charge. Year 2002 up to 2005 released unit has a factory defect ccd imager. the company recalled those units and replaced with a stronger version of ccd imager ( they are still doing it). check it out.

When turn on camera on screen is black

I think your Canon A70 camera does not show live view in camera mode to take pictures but show you previously stored picture properly in playback mode.
If that is true then Canon A70 camera got problem of bad ccd imager that will be replaced to get live vew in camera mode.
Canon will replace ccd imager for free, click Canon CCD Imager Advisory for details.
Thanks.

Canon Powershot A70 Digital

When I got my A70 I got a CD with the software. If I connect the camera with USB cable to the computer, set the little lever on the back for the camera to display whatever pictures are in it, and turn the camera on, the computer recognizes the camera, opens the software and leads me through the process.
If you have some other photo software than the Canon software, it should still work.
