Playback works fine. As a matter of fact, last video cassette recorded plays back great. However, all of a sudden, out of the blue, I can only record voice when in camera mode, and cannot see anything on the screen or on the viewfinder.

I have fully charged the battery on my camera and am unable to get an image to appear in my viewfinder or view screen. I am able to get sound but no image.

Black screen. Records sound, no picuture. I can't believe I missed recording my four year old's birthday and now I'm going to miss Christmas too. I'm not a happy camper with Canon right now.

Had the same issue, no image when I turned it on to record. I read the previous post and acted upon the suggestion to contact Canon directly. They said no problem, gave me a number of a local service centre, I had to pay the shipping and they fixed the CCD Imager problem and shipped it back free of charge. Now, that's service!!!

Possible CCD problem. There is quite a bit of units that are exhibiting this symptom. After having a tech verify that this is indeed the problem, AND ONLY THEN, I would try to contact the mfr, and explain to them that "in your own experience, that there seems to be an awful lot of imaging device failures." Many of them are made by the same OEM supplier and those defective units have been found in hundreds of different camcorder makes; Sony, Canon, JVC, Samsung, just to name a few. I hope this helps ease the pain...

Low battery maybe? Try holding camera firmly in one hand, with camera on and in record mode, and strike in on its edge firmly on the heal of your other hand. This technique is often sucessful with temporary camer 'quirks' like freezing, lens not fully retracting, etc.
