Nec nd3540a firmware problem

hello i happen to have a nec dvdrw device model ND3540A that
is giving me problems lately. i have installed the latest firmware 1.04,
yet the drive wont read cdroms(of any kind). It can read and burn, any
dvd rom/types but it wont read or burn any cdroms(of any kind). i tried
fixing this by going to my computer/device manager, but it states that
the device is working properly. is their anyway to fix this problem
that im having? thanx in advance
