Boy seen this happen too much with these newer aluminum blocks , head gaskets blow and gets to much pressure in crankcase pushes oil right thru the crankcase vent line into carb , you can try replacing the gasket buts been my experience the heads warp too much so it's a moot effort , I just replace short block now if i see em come thru here like that

Carburator leaks gas when cycle is started or running from what looks like vent hose?

Sounds to me like your float valve is obstructed by some debris. This is causing it to stay open and leak fuel. Better it leaks to your vent hose than it leaks in your engine and contaminates your oil.

You need a proper carb cleaning. Not some run in the gas tank sh*t. If the tank wasn't full when parked, chances are there is rust in the fuel system to get this out you need to disassemble the carburetor and thoroughly clean it.

Try not to ride the bike til you do this. It's a fire hazard.

Hi, i just swapped my elec flymo for a briggs and stratton 35 lawn mower, however when ever i start it it coughs and splutters and wont run for more then 30 secs and is also spitting out oil from exhaust....

if the motor has been on its side the oil has runs out thru the muffler and air filter. briggs are famous for doing that. let it sit overnight and remove the air cleaner and you see is fill of oil. next day take the spark plug and clean it and check the gap then put it back, take carburator cleaner and spray some inside the carburator, check the oil level and start.if it wont start then is time to clean carburator. the air filter if is wet in oil and is the dry type. get a new one.

It will start on full choke and run for about 5 seconds and shuts off. I changed oil because it was black. It did same thing a year ago and shop said the fuel line was blocked? I ran it for about 25...

first if its a honda,is it a gas/oil mix as the gas/oil mix plugs up quicker than a 4 cycle engine ?even 4 cycle engines that get bad gas i.e. water in the gas will plug up the carburator from rust, white rust(from water minerals) corrosion, dirt, etc.,when its running and just as it dies out, pull out the choke and see if it picks back up in r.p.m.'s,if it does, then you know its lacking fuel from starvation from plugged fuel lines/carb to keep running, then you need to re-build the carburator or you could first try a can of carb cleaner while its running down into the carburators intake, but this is a tell-tale sign of a bad/dirty carb, try this, with a small wrench, pull off the carburarors "sediment bowl" located just ubder the carbs body and carefully unscrew the brass nut and remove this bowl(careful to NOT lose the gasket) and see how moch water/dirt,etc., is in the bowl if theres water it will look like droplets in the gas in there,if you have this contamination you need to clean out both the gas tank and carburator and all fuel lines leading to and from these to the engine

Overheats won't re-start til cools off.

Your Sportster is an air cooled engine. If it's overheating, you got some serious problems.

First, check your oil level and make sure you've got plenty of oil in the bike. With the engine running and on the side stand, pull the oil fill plug and look into the tank. Shine a flashlight in there and make sure your oil is flowing. You should see the oil flowing back into the tank.

If that's alright, your carburator or fuel injection is running too lean. A too lean mixture will cause the engine spit back through the intake and run too hot.

If it's a carburated bike, you need to go up on step on the slow speed jet and raise the needle about 0.020" to richen the low speed and mid-range mixture. You may even need to richen the main jet up one step.

If the bike is fuel injected, you need to take it to a dealer and have them make the adjustments on the fuel system. The fuel to air ratio should be no higher than 14 to 1, preferrably 13.5:1. Anyone with a exhaust gas analyzer can check this for you. A dyno tune would be a good investment.

Good Luck
Steve

I tried to start my new coleman powermate 6250/5000,

Do check the oil after it has tried to start. Low oil cutoff would certainly cause the problem. Look for the "lost" fuel shutoff valve... there usually is one.

4390 15kw, it will start but only run for 15-20sec. Cleaned and replaced air filter, good oil qty. It's a negative 10F, I have cleaned around the pressure regulators. Again, it starts just fine, does not...

remove the carburator sediment bowl just on the underside of the carburator and see how much sediment is in the bowl,if theres a lot you may need to flush out the carburatror to rid it of these contaminents, also pull out the choke part way when it wants to die,if this keeps it running, this also is an indication of a dirty carburator restricting fuel flow through carburator to the engine intake, sometimes if you can keep it running, spray some carburator cleaner into the throat opening of the carburator and see if this helps

Oil in carburator in a 4 cylinder motor

Check pcv valve and vacuum hose to make sure they are working. Chances are that you have a broken or worn ring, or worn engine bearings. (excessive blowby) In which case there's not much short of rebuild or replacement of engine that will cure problem. You could remove the hose that is bringing the oil into the air intake off the air cleaner and route a longer hose into a can or something temporarily but it's not a cure.

I dont know where do you live, but honda civic 1992 don use carburator, they are fuel injection, you can have coolant temp sensor problem, or map sensor problem, run diagnose jumping the diagnose wires loated in the passenger side, kick panell close to the door wall, better get the repair book in the parts store to locate the conector ,and read how you can run the diagnosis
