Probably out of freon. I am an A/C technician but residential heating and air, not auto air but it's the same process with a different kind of freon. not to sure but they do sell freon for cars you can top it off yourself. one can will probably top it off. advance auto has them.

1997 ford explorer cant get the heater to throw any heat air works fine but temp control doesent to work

blendor actuators have issue with the plastic gears inside geting striped out. listen for poping or clicking noise when turning temp control if you hear the noise you need a blendor actuator.

02 explorer.no heat, makes thumping noise when temp turned to heat

The concern lies in the temperature blend door. Most likely if it is clicking the door is broken where the motor shaft (the motor that actuates the door) goes into the door. Replace both the door and motor ( unfortunately from Ford the whole heater box needs to be replaced) or an aftermarket such as Dorman may have the door separate.  The entire dash needs to be removed for the repair so it is quite costly.
