Try opening in a linux machine and you should have all the hard drive files still on there ready to be used and take them and then reformat you hard drive once you have moved your files to a safe place. and then format back to fat32(works on both mac and windows although limit is only 4gb single file sizes are allowed) or ntfs (only works for windows machines)and copy and paste files back onto the drive. Although your hard may already be formatted in NTFS if so this is why you may not be able to see it.
