Pin retainer broken off from ice dispenser housing

Whirlpool GS6SHAXMB00 side by side pin retainer is broken off of ice maker dispenser housing. It holds the door flapper for the ice dispensor. The repair guy says that I have to replace the WHOLE FREEZER DOOR, because of this tiny little plastic pin retainer. On Oct 21, 2006, "catriver" posted a fix saying that "I have seen a number of these Whirlpools where the pin and spring retainer has broken off from the dispensor housing causing this problem...They have now come out with a kit to address this problem. This is not a fun job for a first timer." After spending an hour on the phone with Whirlpool, I'm unable to identify this kit... can anyone please tell me what the kit number is? Whirlpool doesn't have a clue. THANKS !

Re: pin retainer broken off from ice dispenser housing

Honestly, I just read all this went and looked at mine and figured out I had the same problem. I bent a finishing nail and put it through the holes and pried it up against the housing. It held and I have working water. Might not be professional but it seems to be working

Re: pin retainer broken off from ice dispenser housing

Ill be gald to help you here....The people who answer the phones must be worthless, anyway the part number is 8201756 (ice door kit) it will probably have to be specially ordered, i have installed several and there not exactly easy but it can be done with some patience. Pass this along to your repair guy as he is not giving people correct advice.

I have a jenn-air jcd2389ges. The hole in the door where the ice comes down into your cup is broken. i believe the foam piece is busted

Here is a kit of the most likely parts that you are talking about=> 12001991 Ice Dispenser Solenoid and Door Kit Just disconnect the power and turn water off before beginning to ddisassemble the fispenser components seen here=> JCD2389GES Dispenser Components
1. Unplug the refrigerator power cord.
2. Remove the overflow grille from the housing.
3. Unsnap front cover at the bottom of the housing.
(using a flat blade screwdriver, and tape or pad, twist the screw driver, or pry out the bottom trim using the molded slots in the bottom of the trim panel).
4. Disconnect the front cover switch harness connector and set the cover aside.
5. Disconnect the power wire harness connector (BL/BK and W wires)
6. Disconnect the flapper door heater wire harness connector (if one is present).
7. Release the dispenser microswitch retainers and slide the switches off of their locator pins. Carefully handle the switches so they do not come apart.
8. Disconnect the wires from the terminals of the lamp holder.
9. Remove the two 1/4. hex head screws from the control bracket and remove the control bracket.
10. Remove the 1/4. hex head screw to remove the water fitting (fill spout) from the water dispenser lever.
11. Unsnap the ice guide and remove it from the ice dispenser lever.
12. Remove the air pot by sliding the rear of the air pot out of the slot molded to the dispenser housing and slip the linkage out of the flapper door mechanism assembly.
13. Unsnap the flapper door and remove it from the ice dispenser lever. While you remove the flapper door, carefully guide the flapper door heater wire and connector over the door mechanism assembly.
14. Remove the 1/4. hex head screw securing the dispenser levers pivot retainer to the dispenser housing and remove the retainer.
15. Remove the water dispenser lever.
16. Remove the ice dispenser lever by maneuvering it around the door mechanism assembly.
17. Pull the pin from the door mechanism assembly and remove the spring and mechanism assembly.
18. Reassemble in reverse order.

I have a whirlpool model ED25PWXBN00 refrig and the ice maker is making ice but the part that holds and dispenses the ice has broken and no longer dispenses ice. what part do i need?

That depends if the ice maker continues to fill with water or just sits there with the ice slots empty. Sometimes it is the dual water control valve=> 4318046 Water Control Valve
and sometimes the ice maker itself. Does not hurt to have an extra part of each if you are a ice user like myself. If ice slots are empty fill with tap water and allow to freeze. If the ice drops and slots do not refill with water then replace the dual water control valve. 4317943 Ice Maker Assembly.

Ice Maker not working

Get me the model number. Put tap water in ice maker tray and make sure arm is down. Let it freeze. Wait and see if the ice will drop, this should allow water to come into the ice maker for another run. Let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Whirlpool pin retainer is broken on ice dispenser

this is easy. there is a small area beside where the piece broke off. bend a small peice of metal coat hanger at a 90 degree angle, (this is so you can make your new hole on the correct line) heat the end with a lighter, burn a smallhole thru this area beside where the previous hole existed. now throw away the old pin that you were using and use a piece of coat hanger cut to the right length. on one end bend about one half inch to 90 degree angle, feed thru new hole and thru your spring and flap and thru to opposite side hole and lastly make small bend to keep wire from sliding out. ta da, fixed. problem solved for about two cents. i have successfully repaired many of these doors.

Problem with ice dispenser in side by side refrigerator

Bensmom, the housing that holds the flapper pin probably cracked causing the flapper not to seal. Whirlpool use to have to replace the whole door at one time because the dispenser housing was a non serviceable part. That got too expensive so they came out with a kit to remedy the problem. The kit comes with instructions but you have to be patient and take your time. You want to determine first if this is the actual problem. You can do so by looking up into the dispenser and seeing if the pin retainer is cracked or broken off. I have done a bunch of these and the kit works great. I hate the job though. Part number for the kit is 8201756. I tried to attach a picture of the kit, but I guess the file was too back.
