If you feel that the breakers are warmer than normal when heater on the circuit is being overloaded, either eliminate other loads on circuit when heater is being used or dedicate a separate circuit for heater usage

It could be element shorted to ground through steel tank, so don't touch tank when breaker is ON.
Or you have undersized 12 gauge wire and 20 amp breaker and the heat has loosened breaker on the busbar. Breaker trips when heat exceeds breaker limit. Jiggle breaker and listen for crackling sound.

To restore hot water now:
Turn off circuit breaker, and open top cover then Push in reset button on top of heater to restore functionality. Put back insulation and factory cover.
To fix water heater: test and replace bad element.

I have a 80 gallon Ge smartwater hot water heater model # SE80T .Can a burned out heating element in the water heater cause a circuit breaker to overheat? Thanks

Normally no, but for a circuit breaker to activate, there has to be excessive current draw somewhere. Is the circuit breaker exclusive to the water heater? If it is then the heating element may have shoirted internaly. Fit a new element and restest. Don't forget to check the condition of your sacrifical annode too.

Water heater not working after turning up heat

Did you turn the breaker completely off, then back on? When a breaker trips it is in a middle position, and nust be turned off to reset it, then it can be turned back on.

Not enough heat

Take an Amp draw on all heaters and compare. If within 5%, they are working fine but you may have more open area downstairs than up.

Goodman unit blows 45 amp fuses only in heat mode, worked fine all summer on a/c. It works well for some time then blows them again.

Check the breakers on the unit How many KW--electric heat? Check to see if you have the right wires wired up to the correct breaker cause some units have 40---and ---60 ---amps breakers and your thickest wire could be wired to the 40-amp breakers,, (some 5 KW pullls 19-23 amps respectably some breakers have 7.5 KW heat stips and pulls more and if the wire size can,t cary the amps, then all you have to do is reduce a heat strip.

I had this problem once in an apartment I own. it was an EXTREMELY ease fix. my problem as that the set screws in the breakers were not tightened enough, and would cause heat to build up, and trip the breakers. so..... first try to tighten the set screws on your breakers.

Typical H2O heater with 4500 watt elements should draw around 18 amps. Check to make sure the connections for the wires at the breaker are tight, loose connections will cause the breaker to heat up. If all of this is good and the breaker is still heating up, it is time for a new breaker.
