Question about Velleman DVM850BL Digital Multimeter

1 Answer

I purchased the velleman DVM850BL to check current drain from my vehicles batteries as I keep having to recharge my batteries pretty often. Since I am not an electrician or electronic tech, I would just like to know what settings to use to measure the current drain with this unit. I am wanting to check for mili volt current.

To check the current, you'll have to set up your equipment to the mA (milliamp) position. It's located on the right side of the equipment, on the "A" section. The test leads should be positioned accordingly and it is: black in the middle connector (common) and red on the right connector (mA).
It's safe to start measuring the current in a higher scale. Safe for the equipment. So start measuring with the equipment set to the 10A scale and the red test lead on the left connector (which reads 10ADC or so) and check the reading to see if it's below 0.2A, which is the same equivalent of 200mA. If it is, then it is safe to start reading the milliamp (mA). Undo the leads to the mA port and change the equipment scale to 200mA. If you don't observe this and you try read a current higher than 200mA, your equipment might burnout.
But wait: to measure current, you have to open up the circuit that you pretend to do the reading. You can only measure voltage (not current) with the circuit "closed" (also be careful to not try to measure voltage while the equipment is set to measure Amps. Leads will meltdown!!).
To do this, remove one of the batteries terminal. Doesn't matter if it is positive or negative. Then, with the equipment already set to the scale you want, connect one lead to the terminal and the other to the cable or wire that you just disconnected. This will provide continuance of the circuit, having the current going through the DVM and displaying the actual current through that circuit.

1983 chevy sportvan battery drain

Unfortunately you will have to keep checking the circuits until you find the drain. I would first disconnect both batteries so you can control how much current is available to check.
Could be something in the key switch, the relay that connects the two batteries (if equipped) or something that is seldom used. You should be able to check "hot all the time" circuits like the lights and that horn circuit with the key switch unplugged.

I have a current drain which kills my battery if my 2003 vTundra is not used for a week. We know that if we dissconnect the wire to the fuse box the drain stops. We have pulled all the fuses one at a time,...

all vehicles since the 80s have a continuous drain, it keeps the ecm , radio keyless etc, anything that requires memory, although one week is a little short, i would wonder if the battery is not getting a full charge?? like only used on short trips. disconnect the neg terminal and bridge it with a test light, it should glow bright for a few seconds then dim, that is normal , if it stays bright pull fuses one at a time , you should find the circuit that is staying closed

Battery is dead everyday

You either have a bad battery or a bad alternator. Most alternator shops and Advance auto parts store will check both for free. It is possible for an alternator to charge the battery while the car is running but kill it when it is switched off because of a bad diode in the alternator.

that is the quickest way to check the alternator leave it iddling and disconect the earth cable if it stays running its ok or my own way would be to use a volt meter and if it has about 13 volts or there abouts its ok and that would suggest a faulty battery or somethung draining the current wken its not running

Craftsamen 18.5 hp battery keeps draining

Either the battery is not being recharged when the engine is running or there is a current drain when stopped. If you are not knowledgeable about electrical tests you can check for current drain by disconnecting the battery negative cable when not running. If the battery stays charged then you need to find the current drain. To check for no charge when running, turn on the headlights with the key on but engine stopped. Start the engine and see if they become somewhat brighter. If brighter, the charging system works. If not, there is a problem in the charging system which needs to be confirmed with a voltmeter.
