This is most often caused by the filaments shorting when the bulb blows, or by not disconnecting the microwave from the power line when removing or installing a bulb.

This is a problem with the control panel assembly, which we repair nationwide for $39.95.

GE has the manuals for most of their appliances on their site: http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/literature/ . Just enter the model number and click Submit.
The direct link to the manual for the JVM1790 Over-the-Range Convection/Microwave oven is here: http://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-40480-1.pdf . GE only lists the JVM1790CK, JVM1790BK, JVM1790WK and JVM1790SK.

I hope this helps.

I have a panasonic convection/microwave. Last night, after I cleaned it, using oven cleaner on a sponge, it made a loud humming noise after running on microwave for about 10 sec. It does not make the noise...

Since the unit makes the noise on Microwave but not convection it is a problem it he Microwave Circuit. Probably in either the rectifier of bad mag, one of them shorted. Just looked at the date you posted this, Im sure you have fixed or replaced this by now

I have an R-8310 Sharp Microwave/convection oven. It just quit working while I was baking potatoes. There is no light and no sound. How old is this oven? Am I in the market for a new one? VLC

This is a 1985 model.

I would bet that the magnetron overheated, tripping the thermal cutout on the magnetron.

This can happen if the internal cooling fan is not running, or if the vents are blocked, or if the magnetron is failing and running hot, due to age in this case I would bet.

If you or someone you know can check and replace the defective parts, it would probably be economical, especially since this is a convection model.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for test help, but read the safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it is NOT shorted or burned looking, it's probably fine)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html
(continuity can be good even though mag is bad!)

If you don't use the convection feature much, a simpler replacement oven may be the way to go.

You can find the bulk of the service manual with parts list online here.

Once you have part numbers, you can get pats at a good price from Encompass here or you can call them toll-free at 866-779-5835.

GE JVM1190 control pad

It is not your key panel, but the magnetron inside the microwave that is causing you the problem. The reason it does not short out on defrost or convection is because it is not drawing as much current through the magnetron to short out.

My microwave/convection oven blew a fuse. replaced it and the convection works but when I try to use the microwave it blows the fuse again. what needs to be fixed?

Typically, when the fuse blows in the microwave, the high voltage capacitor fails and becomes shorted.
The door switches are also configured in such a way that if tampered with (in this case, failed switch or latch) the fuse will also blow. Check the capacitor first.

If you need further assistance let me know
