Usually there is not. The timing is through the flywheel that connects to the crankshaft and it is permanently set with a woodruff key. When evereything is tight, the timing is good. IF you hit something and cause the blades to stop, the flywheel can move and twist on the shaft and bend the woodruff key. The engine then wont start or will backfire etc. To fix this you need to pull the flywheel off the crankshaft and replace the woodruff key and reinstall it.

I have a 89 jeep wrangler 4.2 with peugeot transmission ...I just bought jeep it started but makes a grinding sound like the starter bad then all sudden it won't crank...so I got new starter replaced...


recheck the parts to be the correct ones because what you are describing is a gear mesh problem. ensure the gear on the starter matches those gear teeth on the flywheel. once you know they are matching and are correct for that year and size of engine, you will need a variety of shims to set the distance between the two correctly. (which you already have experience at). But it is important you have the correct starter because the solenoid and the throw-out spring are specific made to travel a set distance. If that distance is not far/long enough the gear will not full engage the width/thickness of the flywheel tooth/teeth (which causes the starter gear to strip those teeth of the back side of flywheel). SO you need to do some serious looking at those parts and the meshing when solenoid is engaging.

I need help not sure how to set the timing on my Husqvarna 225R brush saw.i replaced the coil and now i got no spark, so i need to know how to set the timing can you help?


the timing is set by the flywheel and its key, assuming the key has not sheared the only adjustment that can be done is the air gap between the flywheel and the ignition unit, this should be 0.3mm, be aware there were two different ignition units on this model, the early unit was a Phelon unit and only fitted with a three magnet flywheel, the later machine had a Walbro unit and only fitted with a two magnet flywheel, you cannot mix and match these parts.

Hi I have a 1985 Honda XL100 Id like to know the procedure for setting the ignition timing. I know how to set the points but its the timing I dont know. Is it the timing chain that I have to check...


if it create backfire the timing is not set properly, put the timing mark T of the flywheel to the center of the hole of the crankcase, be sure your in power stroke position.how to know that your in power stroke position get the cover of intake and exhaust valve then put the T of the flywheel on the center of the hole, then move the flywheel back and forth if you see that your valve is moving turn the flywheel another turn 360 degress and check the valve will not move that is already power stroke. that"s the time you can set your timing, center T on the hole and then the cam sprocket has a 0 put it on the top there is slash on the top of your cylinder center it.

How do you do the timing on a victa lawnkeeper? I know it is 3 deg but there is no marks so how do I tell where the 3 deg is?


The curent victa 2-stroke engine(power torque) does not have adjustable timing. All you do is set the air gap between the coil & flywheel and its set. The simplicity of modern electronics has done with points etc

The previous Victa 2 stroke engines sometimes had points which is located under the flywheel - on these you need to first set the points gap. Now the actual timing is 1/8 inch BTDC. The coil & points are on an adjustable frame ( plate or whatever you call it) which is secured by 2 bolts ( 7/16" headsize size from memory) - loosen these 2 bolts and you should be able to rotate the assembly about 1/2 ".as it has elongated boltholes. Rotate the motor (clockwise looking down) so the piston is 1/8" BTDC if its correctly timed the points should just be opening. Move the coil/points assembly ( & tigten the 2 bolts each time) till you get it right, In practice the timing does not need to checked - if it ran OK before then if you need to disassemble ,mark the coil/points plate & engine body so you dont change the timing

How to install timing belt on 1998 vw beetle

Things You'll Need: · Set of quarter-inch drive sockets Quarter-inch drive ratchet Set of half-inch drive sockets Half-inch drive air gun Set of metric wrenches Special tools for holding camshaft timing #2065-A and injection pump #2064

Step 1

Remove the accessory drive belts and the accessory drive belt tensioner. Remove the upper timing belt cover and the valve cover. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the No.1 cylinder is atop, dead center, with the flywheel timing marks aligned.

Step 2

Install the special tool setting bar (#2065-A) on the rear of the camshaft. If it does not fit, turn the crankshaft once more and line up the timing marks again in the hole of the transmission housing.

Step 3

Insert locking pin #2064 into the injection pump to hold it in position. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts, the crankshaft pulley and the lower timing belt cover. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut and allow the tensioner to move away from the belt. Loosely tighten the nut to hold the tensioner out of the way. Remove the top guide pulley and the timing belt.

Step 4

Make sure that the timing mark on the flywheel is lined up and that the camshaft setting bar and injection locking pin are in place. Loosen the camshaft bolt a half turn and tap the sprocket with a soft mallet to loosen it off its taper. The sprocket should move freely. Install the top guide pulley and torque to 18 foot pounds of torque.

Step 5

Install the new timing belt, starting on the right side and working counterclockwise. Keep the tension on the right nontensioned side. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut. Using the two-pin wrench, turn the tensioner pulley clockwise until the notch and raised mark are aligned. Torque the tensioner pulley nut to 15 foot pounds of torque. Make sure the flywheel timing mark is still aligned.

Step 6

Torque the camshaft bolt to 33 foot pounds of torque. Remove the locking pin from the injection pump and remove the camshaft setting bar. Turn the crankshaft two turns and check the alignment on the flywheel. Make sure that the setting bar can be inserted easily and that the injection pump locking pin can be inserted. Install all components in reverse order of removal and torque the crankshaft bolt to 18 foot pounds of torque.

My Recommendation - Pay an authorized VW mechanic $500 to replace the timing belt water pump an tensioner, and sleep better knowing that the job was done right. YOU MAY HAVE TO USE A PULLER FOR THE FLYWHEEL I CAN'T SEE ANYTHING ON THE BREAKDOWN OF THE ENGINE THAT WOULD SHOW ANY THREADED HOLES FOR BOLTS TO REMOVE THE FLYWHEEL

How do I change flywheel key


remove the nut that holds the flywheel on.right hand threads.once the nut and starter hub is off the keyway will be visible.you can tell if it is broken then.if it isn't put the hub and nut back on.....problem somewhere else.if it is broken...take a small hammer and tap the flywheel on the oppisit side of the keyway.usually only takes a couple of hits from the hammer.once the flywheel is off the key comes right out of the crank shaft......replace the key,reinstall the flywheel.(some times you have to hold the brake off so the flywheel will slip all the way on shaft) install hub and nut.hope this helped,let me know........................
