Verify power is coming to the unit with a multimeter. If power is present disconnect the unit and wait ten seconds then plug it back in. Also verify that the units battery (if applicable) is in good condition

How do I change the battery on Honeywell Thermostat T8001C?

According to the manual for the model series (see link), only the T8002 Model has batteries. They are accessed from the right side of the thermostat. See page 14.

My furnace has stopped working. the thermostat (Honeywell Chromotherm III) displays HOLD - AC. What does this mean? I replaced the batteries but nothing has changed.

Try to find a reset button or just change out the thermostat. I'm guessing you don't have the manual. Thats a pretty old model, I think you have to set the time and day before you can use the thermostat.
