You can but try! However either make a drawing of how the thing fits together or better still take pictures if you have a digital camera. Then you will know how it fitted together.

Ensure the rubber pinch roller presses the tape against the capstan drive shaft....ensure the capstan drive motor is turning..and the belt to the flywheel is snug, and not slipping. the tape transport engage relay might be stuck...a relay maybe corroded ...may need cleaning. Without seeing it cant say clearly what may be the problem. also ensure the tape tension/shut-off arm is under tension by tape that is correctly installed.

I have a Tascam 688 mini studio, its 8 tracks on a cassette tape, I have just replaced the capstan belt and now the tape speed is way too fast even when I'm in variable mode with the speed turned all the...

It is possible the control transistor in the capstan motor has shorted due to age. There is a control in the deck for calibration of speed but then you need equipment and a MXT111 test tape to set the speed. So you may need a new Capstan motor or maybe just an adjustment- hard to say exactly without me looking at it- yes, I still fix them. I have been doing them for about 45 years and I worked at Teac as a Lead Tech in Arlington Heights IL.

There are many places if you look to find belts. MCM sold some, PRB, Ken's Electronics in MI, Then there is Marrs. Consolidated has a lot of great belts at the right price but they may not be thick enough.
The belts are both change by taking off the front panel and all the knobs and getting to the mechanism in this way. The counter belt is easy the Capstan Belt more difficult as you need to unmount the head block- do not mess with head adjustment screws. The belt is slipped under the Flywheel and threaded onto the motor pulley. After you put the belt in and it works well the speed adjustment is next. This is done with a speed alignment tape and frequency counter or wow and flutter meter for both speeds. The adjustment is two blue pots on the capstan servo board on the left side of the deck. The metal cover must be off. Head alignment will not be affected unless you play around with head screws. The head base assembly can be detached without alignment issues as I have done it many times. Of course Technicians go through the alignment procedure before returning the deck most times.
I do and I was a Teac Lead Technician and still do repairs now.

You probably need a new belt as well and the lubrication of the capstan bearings come from extracting the flywheels from the unit when the belt is changed. Then oil is put into those bearings and the new belt will make a big difference. The capstan motor should also have oil added to the top bearing. After this a speed calibration will be needed. I have worked on hundreds of cassettes of every different brand so I am familiar with what they need.

Instructions for Teac Tascam 32-2B belt replacement. I have had this Reel to Reel Tape Recorder for a number of years and the belts have now perished. I have purchased replacement belts on ebay but could...

Ebay is the worse place to get belts- why do I know this? Well, as a servicer I am constantly replacing belts that are from E bay when clients can not get their decks to work with those wrong belts. While the counter belt is not critical the capstan belts are in a dual capstan system. The 32-2B is a X10 derivative so it will need proper servicing to work well. I am in the Chicago area and work on decks all the time as Skywave Tape Deck Repair just google it.

Need capstan belt for reel to reel -tascam-dx-44,pls help.

The model is not a DX44 as that is a dBx unit attached to either a Tascam 44 or 40-4. The tape deck model would need to be determined and when that is done go to Marrs Communications and order the belt kit for that machine and you will get the capstan and counter belt.
