Basically testing the motherboard is a process of elimination. Unfortunately for laptops it can be pretty tricky. First thing to test is the charger. Most chargers have an indicator light on the box midway through the charging cable. Check to see if there is a light, and if so is it on?

If the light is on then the charger is probably OK. The next step is not so cut and dry. If there are no lights AT ALL then it is probably one of two things -

1. The DC power jack where you plug the charger in has a bad connection. This is relatively common and is a pretty cheap fix IF you know someone who can solder a new one for you.

2. The motherboard is bad - laptop motherboards are costly to replace and often you are better off buying a new machine

The problem is in diagnosing which it is. They both have identical symptoms, and the only real way I can think to discern between the two is to try the fix for number 1. and if that fails then the motherboard is likely dead

My Toshiba laptop wont POST

Sounds to me like a fault on the Primary Circuit Board. to test if it's the motherboard, try unplugging the laptop, turning it upside down, removing the battery, taking the RAM out of the pc and starting the laptop without and RAM inside it. if you dont hear the motherboard beeping it's not a good sign :(

Computer wont turn on... asus p4s800 mother board

The 3-beep code (probably 1 long then 2 short beeps) means a memory problem. Take the RAM modules out of their sockets, gently clean off their contact fingers with a pencil eraser, and plug them back in. Make sure they're firmly seated and latch into place. Try restarting the computer.

If you still have the beep code, try to borrow a known good RAM module of the same type for testing. It doesn't need to be the same size (in MB), but close in speed. This will let you determine if the motherboard itself is bad.

If you don't have a known good module for testing and there's more than one module installed, take them out again. Reinstall one and try restarting the computer, and repeat for each module. This allows you to check each one separately to determine which is causing the problem. (This is where a good piece for testing is handy. I've been stung several times by all the memory being bad, and thinking it was the motherboard. Now I always keep some good memory for testing.)

Good luck, and thanks for using Fixya.

Try to turn on computer and the fan blows, but light jiggles and nothing happens. Hard drive shot or processor or ...???

Sounds like the power supply or the motherboard. If you have another computer available, you can test the power supply. Just "borrow" the power supply from the other computer. If it still won't come on, then the motherboard might be bad and you'll need replacement.

If you swap the power supply and the motherboard is bad, you will not hurt the working power supply. The motherboard is already dead and won't feed back to the working power supply.

Also, if you have flashed your BIOS recently and it has not completed successfully, you might have a dead motherboard and you will need to replace it. You would know if you flashed or updated your BIOS chip.

Hope this helps!

My tower has power but won't come on

first guess is the motherboard is bad

a few things you can try:

unhook the monitor from the computer and test it on another computer. If the monitor works then its most likely the motherboard.

leave the computer unplugged for a few hours then plug it back up and give it another try just in case it overheated.

have the computers power supply tested as a bad power supply can cause all sorts of issues.

other than that you are down to a new motherboard and or a new computer.

No video & keyboard wont light up. MSI p6n sli platnium

It sounds to me like you are right with the motherboard being bad, however, before you try that, try re-seating the memory. Also, try just putting 1 memory stick in. If you do both of those and still nothing, then I would definitely look into getting a new motherboard because that probably is your problem.

Computer wont turn on

It sounds like either the mother board is bad or the power supply is bad. If you have an extra computer try swapping the power supply over to this computer. If it still does not turn on the motherboard may be bad. One other issue you may have is the power switch could be bad. This is a very rare issue if the power switch is bad. The way to test to see if the power is bad is try and plug in a switch from a different computer. Keep me posted. If you found this solution helpful please rate me.

My compaq notebook 100 wont come on

Sounds like your motherboard or the memory on the motherboard has gone bad. The motherboard handles the initial start-up of the computer, like testing memory, and making sure all the other components can communicate with each other. Your hard drive, and thus all your data, is fine. If you have other memory around (it will need to be the exact same type thats currently in there), you can swap it out and see if the computer boots with new memory. If not, then the entire motherboard needs to be replaced. You just need to contact your PC manufacturer to get a replacement motherboard.
