Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

Microwave Our Kenmore elite microwave model 66561689101 intermitting on and off. Most of the time it turns off just after it starts and then makes a weird screech sound and then starts back up and is good to go. However, sometimes it continues to turn on and off intermittingly. Not sure if this could be the thermal cut out going bad?

Check turntable operation. Your microwave may sense some rotation problem (such as none) and shut down. The motor could be failing.

The turntable seems to work fine. Seems more like a power supply issue. That's why I was thinking thermal cutout.

SOURCE: kenmore elite microwave oven displays "Locked" and will not respond

My Kenmore Elite microwave (don't have the model number in front of me) also mysteriously locked its own keypad (we were sitting in an adjacent room, heard a strange beep, and got up to find the LED reading "Locked."). I pressed and held down the Stop/Clear button for ~10 seconds and it returned to normal.

SOURCE: Owners manual for Kenmore Elite Microwave Model 66462

A full Sears/Kenmore model number has 3 digits, a dot, then 8 more digits, such as ###.########

You can just enter your full model number at the Sears parts site.

On the resulting page, look to the right for the blue "View manuals" button. Click there.

That Sears-related site has many free manuals. While the manuals they list there are all free, they will ask you to register.

Many times, the owner's manual will have the installation instructions inside.

If yours is not listed there for free, you would have to order it through the
Sears parts site.

SOURCE: Sears Kenmore Elite Microwave F-9 Error

My guess is that it is the main transformer that has developed a fault. If the insulation has broken down - it will arc there instead of the magnatron. Or it could be the magnatron itself. Both are prime suspects - and expensive to replace.

Unless you are particularly attatched to this - I would buy a new unit - and sell the turntable plate to recoup your losses.

After pressing start, light goes on but not operating. Senor issue?

I had a similar problem once with an older Kenmore microwave, which at the time, were actually made by LG. After removing the cabinet, there was a small automotive type fuse in a clip-in fuse holder which proved to be "open" after checking it for continuity with a test meter. I replaced the fuse with the EXACT type and rating, and continued to use the oven for several more years until I gave it away. Please note, that microwave ovens are not something that you want to mess around with. Make absolutely certain that you have unplugged it before doing anything. In my case, I suspect the after several years of trouble-free use, the fuse had failed, -likely due to age. In your case, it may be a similar issue, so you might want to see if your microwave oven has a similar replaceable fuse. Beyond that, I would strongly suggest taking it to an approved service facility. Also, NEVER operate the microwave until you have replaced all covers, cabinet, etc. to it's original state.

Kenmore microwave oven power fluctuations

The magnatron, HV capacitor or the transformer. Dangerous place to work in the High Voltage section. Cap can hold a charge so short to ground after unplugging when working around it. Unplug one at a time starting with the mag and see which one is causing the draw.

The most common problems of microwave oven are the HV capacitor, HV diode and lastly the magnetron which is the main part of M O. check the capacitor and diode first, if its okay, then you have a decision to make. replace the magnetron or the whole unit. magnetron are costly

Noise/humming while cooking; especially popcorn; intermitent on other food

Popcorn is heated by a metallic insert in the bag. This causes some additional power consumption by the magnetron. It is no cause for alarm.
