Question about Ingersoll Air Tools & Compressors

My wife left on my air compressor it is a Ingersoll-rand and now it turns on but doesnt sound like the motor is running but one of the belts in broke any ideas

The motor turns the belt that drives the actual compressor portion of the system. Replace the belt, make sure there is oil in the compressor pistons and try it out.

How old is the compressor ? This trouble shooting is directed to the vane and screw types of air compressors.

Caution,
For exact information on the equipment you are working on, go to the manufacturer’s maintenance and repair manual.

Here are some possibilities.

Compressor does not reach design pressure or capacity:
Air Pressure safety valve is leaking
Receiver air valve is open
Unloader valve is leaking
Loose Piping or fittings

Compressor will not load or unload:
Unloader valve defective
Air control valve is sticking or dirty
Unloader pressure is improperly set too high or too low
Water in the control lines
Plugged control lines

The air compressor CFPM is low:
Dirty air compressor air filter
Defective air intake control valve
High idle on power source improperly set
Damaged or worn rotor blades

Most honda engines have an oil sensor that prevents the engine from starting if the oil level is low or oil is dirty. Test coil by disconnecting oil sensor wire. With sensor disconnected coil should fire. If still no fire, check kill wire for short. If still no spark, coil may need to be replaced. enjoy

Hi i have an Ingersoll rand 80 gal, 7.5 hp, model #2475 air compressor and the electric motor is arcing when trying to run then blows the breaker. Any ideas? thanks


It sounds like either a problem with the brushes in the motor or the engine shaft is jammed. Have you on many previous occasions run the compressor on that circuit with no problems? It may be as simple as the breaker is not sufficient for the power draw of the compressor.

If you have had the unit for awhile and it has been run lots and the engine shaft spins easily when turned by hand (unplug first) then it may be an issue with the brushes on the electric motor. Take the engine apart and replace the brushes with new ones from an electric motor shop. Take pictures as you disassemble the unit so you will be able to refer to them when it comes time for reassembly.

If the motor shaft does not turn by hand, remove the belt that connects it to a compressor and try again. If this works, reconnect the power and see if the electric motor now works with power on and the belt off. If the motor works and there is no short to throw the breaker, then your compressor is in need of a rebuild and that will cost money and time.

I have ingrosoll rand t30 model 2340 motor is working very hard to spin the compressor sound of compressor is different to , rubber burning smell is also there , but belt is in good shape it is not loose.


May have a bearing going bad. Remove the v-belt and turn the motor by hand. Does it turn hard or produce an unusual noise. If so you have a bad motor bearing. If not turn the pump by hand. If it turns hard or produces an unusual noise you have a bad bearing in the pump. Also move the pump fly wheel up and down , left and right. If you can move it the front bearing is bad.

I have a two stage electric air compressor that wants to stall. I turn it on and as it runs up, it will labor and stop. Checked oil and it is full. This compressor is used very little, what should I do...


check both motor start and run capacitors if it starts o.k. but loses power as pressure increases,this could be a sign of a weak motor run cap.if this helps replace both caps cause its cheaper than a new motor

Actually not a lot of Parts.
1) Remove & Clean the Air Intake Element
a) Check and see IF the Secondary Pump Head has a Filter/Breather and Clean That also...
2) Drain and Change the Oil (per Manufacturer Requirements-I PREFER Ingersoll-Rand Compressor Oil Myself) Don't Over-Fill!!
3) Check the Wear on the Drive Belt(s) and Tension ( Deflection shouldn't be more than 5/8" Between the Motor and Compressor)
4) I usually Blow out the Motor with about 20psi of Air, since it probably has Sealed Shaft Support Bearings, and is the Brushless Type, Not Much to do. Pull Off the Inspection Plate, and Check for How Clean the Inside of the Motor is BEFORE you "Air-it-Out", if there are any signs of Greasy Dirt, you may want to get some Electrical Spray Cleaner, and spray just enough to Wash the Contaminants off...
5) DRAIN Your Main Holding Tank: Drain Until there is NO Moisture Left, just Dry Air. You could Drain into a Pint Mason Jar-Just make Sure you Only Open the Drain just enough to let a Minimal amount of Flow, and see what Contaminants are in your Tank...(this should be done at least Once a week anyways) I installed a Auto-Drain on Mine, AND a Auto Water Drain on the Regulator is a Great idea too...
6) Check ALL your Wiring Connections, make sure they are Tight...Vibration will cause them to Loosen.
7) Sometimes is a Good idea to Check Your Keyways on Your Pulley Shafts for Wear, should be a "Press-Fit"
8) Check the Pulley/Belt alignment, make sure it's running True. IF Not, Check Your Motor & Compressor Mounting Bolts

I usually do a PM (Periodical Maintanence) about every 3 Months on My Compressors...and don't forget to Oil Your Air Tools Before each Use.
