Most national chain autoparts stores have a device called a belt measurement table you lay the belt out on in and read the outline of where it meets a black line then you hold belt on edge of table and it tells you the widgth of belt
Cars have the same problem some times

SOURCE: on my two stage snow blower--main auger stops turning .

Hi, I figured out the problem. The gear transfer case between the augers must be broke. The auger spins slowly until it hits snow and then stops-- The discharge fan continues to spin fast. I will try to get a local handyman to fix it or else but a new machine, this one must be at least 15-16 years old.
I thank you for your help, it is a great service. ojohn

SOURCE: auger on my snow blower won't turn.

First take a look at the shear pins they will be located on the augers going thru the auger and auger shaft, if they look ok then you need to take the belt off, with the belt off try to turn the im peller by hand. If the impeller does not turn then you need to look to see if something is stuck in the impeller or in the auger. If nothing is stuck in between anything then I would have to say it's going to be the gear box. If the impeller turns then look to see if the auger is turning also while turning the impeller. If the auger doesn't turn then it's probably the gear box. If it does turn then you have an issue at the pulleys

SOURCE: I have an Ariens 926LE

Hi, The blower spins at full speed? If it does the belt, pulley, and shaft are good. Look at the shaft from the fan to the gear box while it's running and that shaft should be turning at the speed of the fan.
If the blower spins at full speed and the auger doesn't the most likely problem is the worm gear transmission from the blower shaft to the auger shaft.
A good way to visually inspect this is: With the machine turned off and the spark plug wire unhooked go to the front and try to rotate the auger by hand. If the gear box is good you will only be able to move the auger less than an inch. If the box is bad you will be able to move the auger a lot farther. While you are there recheck your shear pins.
You can also remove the blower drive belt and have someone turn the pulley by hand while you watch the auger. Put resistance on the auger with your gloved hand. If the box is good the auger will move smoothly in you hand. If it is bad, it will ****, move roughly, or stop.
While the other person is turning the pulley and you have some resistance on the auger look closely at the shaft running from the gearbox back to the blower. On some models there is a connecting sleeve and the roll pin that connects the sleeve to the shaft and gearbox will break.
If the gearbox is bad, it will have to be replaced as a complete unit.
Was this helpful? If you have any other questions, please ask.

SOURCE: Snowblower doesn't throw the snow

The most common cause of this is the drive belt is worn.
If you remove the cover (usually plastic) in the middle of the snow thrower and look at the belts.
Your operator's manual will show you how to remove the cover and check/change the belts.
The belt closest to the blower assembly drives the auger/blower and the belt closest to the engine drives the transmission.
With the engine not running, have someone depress the drive lever and check the blower belt.
You should only be able to depress the long side 1/2 inch or less. More than that the belt has stretched and needs to be replaced.
On some older blowers you can adjust the tension pulley, but most made in the last 15 years, you can't.
The belt may be frayed on the edges or glazed causing it to slip (it is shiny on the sides of the belt) It may be torn and broke completely.
You can get parts for you Craftsman and most Husqvarana, MTD made models through searspartsdirect.com. You can also get parts through jackssmallengines.com or your local dealer.
If you are unfamiliar with repairing machines take it to your local dealer. They will have a technician troubleshoot and repair the unit.
Feel free to ask any other questions to troubleshoot this problem farther. I know Snow Blowers. Please remember to rate this answer!

Most self propelled units have 2 belts. One for the auger, and one to power the wheels. Check the belts, and then check the drive assembly under the motor to see if it is engaging.

I have an MTD single-stage snow blower that I replace the other the cable and the belt and under a load it's still not throwing snow

There should be 2 holes on the handle that engages the auger belt, use the top hole as it will increase the belt tension.
Check the condition of the rubber auger's rubber paddles as they are subject to wear and should be replaced if any signs of excessive
wear is present.

24 in aries snow blower throws snow for maybe 2 ft any ideas

Since your snowblower is a two stage all metal unit the only thing keeping the snow from shooting out is either a worn out drive belt or a weak engine. The belt is the easy thing to change. Buy a new drive belt too since it is a good time to change both at the same time. The unit actually breaks into two parts at the back of the auger housing to expose the belts for changing. A local shop can do this service for 100-$200 bucks along with an oil change and chassis lube. Not too bad since this will keep your unit running reliably for years to come.

Snow thrower auger won't turn

One of the grip levers should engage a clutch that controls the augers. The other grip lever should engage a clutch to drive the wheels. Figure out which is which, and track the linkage from that lever down to the gearbox between the augers and the impeller. See if there's an adjustment you can make there.

If not... the gearbox may be damaged, possibly by hitting a solid object with hardened bolts in the place of your shear pins. ALWAYS use soft shear pins!
