All Sony notebooks come with a built-in fan that keeps the hardware components in the laptop from overheating.

When the fan on your Sony notebook does not spin, your motherboard or other key hardware components may become permanently damaged.

If your Sony notebook fan is not spinning, it is important to resolve the issue as soon as possible to avoid further problems.

By going through each of the most likely causes for this problem, you can determine how to get the fan in your Sony notebook working again.Clogged Fan

A Sony notebook computer has vents on the bottom that enable air to flow in and out of the laptop's fan.
Occasionally, dust and other particles may get into the fan through this vent, which can cause the fan to become clogged.

When the fan is clogged, the fan may either spin slower than normal or stop spinning altogether. You can usually fix a clogged fan on your Sony notebook by using a can of compressed air to blow the dust out.

Consult your Sony notebook's user guide to determine how to safely access the fan for cleaning. Disconnected Fan

The fan on the Sony notebook is connected through a wire to the power supply on the laptop. Although this wire is firmly connected from the fan to the supply, it may become disconnected if the Sony notebook is dropped.

When the fan's wire is disconnected, the fan will not spin because it is unable to draw the power it needs to function properly.

You can check whether or not the wire is connected by following the directions listed in your Sony notebook's user guide to take apart the computer.

Defective Fan Your Sony notebook's fan may not spin because the fan is defective.
The fan may become damaged if the notebook itself is damaged in some way.

Occasionally the fan may be defective due to a manufacturing error, as is often the case with the VGN-CS and VGN-BZ Sony notebooks: these notebooks have an extended warranty due to faulty fans.

You can have your fan replaced by Sony for free if the notebook is still under warranty. Otherwise, you may need to pay to have the defective fan replaced.
Other Problems
If the fan is clean, fully functioning and connected correctly to the notebook's power supply, your Sony notebook's fan may not spin due to a defective power supply that prevents the fan from receiving the power that it needs to function.

Alternatively, your fan's wire may be frayed or otherwise damaged, which can cause the fan not to spin.

In either case, you must repair the faulty component in order to restore full functionality to the Sony notebook's fan.

Have a sony vaio pcg that is over heating can you replace the thermostat on the motherboard or is it with the fan/heat sink unit or is it more likely the fan which isn't turning on

Most likely it is not the fan unless you cannot feel air blowing out or the fan noise. It is rather an accumulation of dust in the radiator vents and fan housing. this will necessitate a partial stripdown to clear it properly, at a pinch you can try vaccuming out the dust, but a full claening is better

Check all of your adapter cards (PCI or AGP or PCIE) to ensure they are seated into the MB properly. As the problem seems video related double check the graphics adapter if it is a stand alone card. AGP cards can be tricky to seat properly on some mb's

I have a sony vaio fz260e. I blew dust out of it today through the vents using a canister of air. Now the fan does not come on.

The fan only comes on when needed,, when you first turn the laptop on it will come on for a sec<--test this!!

if it comes on in the test your good,, dust will make the fan run all the time..

If it dont come on in the test and it worked b4 its jamed with a ball of dust,, fix asap or the fan will burn out!!

My Sony Vaio pcg 3C2L's fan is always making horrible rumbling noises, like it is overheated and a ball is running between it. even if i only turn it on for five minutes.

Hi would i suggest is do not turn it on at all, while you can get a cooling pad for you laptop it does not work that well. Please take it to a repair shop inmediately. Sony and HPs tend to overheat a lot and the problem is that the video card on the motherboard goes bad and you will have to buy a replacement is the most expensive part rather than just the fan+labor. I hope this helps.

My vaio VGN-FW390 fan make noise.

The fan makes noise in high preformance windows like windows vista&7. So it is normal, because the windows uses motherboard, ram and graphics card with high preformance so they get hotter, so the fan get stronger to cool them or they will be damaged.
This noise also exist in windows xp, but only when opening high graphics game, or being working with the laptop for along time.

Problem with Sony Vaio pcv-rx860 (screen goes black at startup)

I would suggest first to try to take one stick of memory out and try to boot up the pc. Sometimes, one or both of the memory sticks can go bad or the memory slot on the motherboard itself can go bad. If that is not the case I would then remove all of the usb connected to the computer and last i would test the power supply.

I need steps to replace Fan for my Sony VAIO VGN-S460

the fan is screwed together with the motherboard, the only way i figured is to separate it is completely unscrew the motherboard, cd drives.....then unscrew the fan from the bottom side of the motherboard....

i took the fan out just today, wantted to add some lubricating oil to it, but then can't manage to separate the blades & expose the centre

how much did the replacement fan cost? i am in canada, not even sure sony stores here have it.

Vaio will not turm on

you will most likely need to replace the dc jack, which is the port where your charger plug plugs into...

To test if your dc jack is bad... Remove the Battery, Plug the Power cord into laptop then attempt to power on... If no lights turn on, no fan spins.. your DC jack is bad...
DC Jacks Cost $6 to $10 but you need to find someone experienced to replace it, or you might end up with a dead motherboard as well..
