Transmission fluid change

I wanted to change the transmission fluid by myself but I know only the basics of maintaing a car. How do you change transmission fluid?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

It's not easy. You should acquire a repair manual if you want to start doing your own maintenance.

Most cars require dropping the pan, pulling the filter and changing the gasket. It can be messy but fairly easy. At the parts store get the correct fluid for your vehicle. (Should be Dexron) and a new filter and gasket. Loosen all bolts but leave two or three in until you've drained the old fluid into a large pan with one corner lower than the other. Take out the rest of the bolts. Wipe the pan out, put in the new filter (instructions should be in the box.), replace pan and tighten the bolts to specs with a torque wrench but be careful and make sure it's not foot pounds instead of inch pounds. If you don't have a torque wrench try to tighten evenly with LIGHT TO MODERATE tightness. Check for leaks and snug bolts as needed. Take used oil to lube shop. This only changes SOME of the fluid but it's most often the procedure offered at the garage unless they specifiy a total fluid change. If you want to replace it all, if it's completely nasty, dark and burnt smelling you have to disconnect the trans coolant lines into the radiator too. If it's that bad you may want to have it done and replace the whole shebang.

The fluid must be hot before it is drained; a 20 minute drive should accomplish this.

  1. To drain the automatic transaxle fluid, the fluid pan must be removed. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Place a drain pan underneath the transaxle pan, then remove the pan attaching bolts except on the four corners of the pan.
  2. Loosen the four attaching bolts on the corners approximately four turns each, but do not remove them.
  3. Very carefully pry the pan loose on one corner. You can use a small prybar for this if you work CAREFULLY. Do not distort the pan flange, or score the mating surface of the transaxle case. You'll be very sorry later if you do. As the pan is pried loose, all of the fluid is going to come pouring out.
  4. Carefully break the other corners loose until fluid is flowing steadily from the entire pan.
  5. After the fluid is down flowing, remove one corner bolt and attempt to drain any remaining fluid. Remove the remaining bolts and remove the pan and gasket. Throw away the gasket.
  6. Clean the pan with solvent and allow it to air dry. If you use a rag to wipe out the pan, you risk leaving bite of lint behind, which will clog the dinky hydraulic passages in the transaxle.
  7. Remove and discard the filter and the O-ring seal.
To install:
  1. Install a new filter and O-ring, locating the filter against the dipstick stop.
  2. Position a new gasket on the pan, then install the pan. Tighten the bolts evenly and in rotation to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm.). Do not overtighten.
  3. Add approximately 4 qts. (3.8 L) of DEXRON®III or IIE automatic transmission fluid to the transaxle through the dipstick tube. You will need a long necked funnel, or a funnel and tube to do this.
  4. With the transaxle in P, put on the parking brake, block the front wheels, start the engine and let it idle. DO NOT RACE THE ENGINE. DO NOT MOVE THE LEVER THROUGH ITS RANGES.
  5. With the lever in Park, check the fluid level. If it's OK, take the car out for a short drive, park on a level surface, and check the level again, as outlined earlier in this section. Add more fluid if necessary. Be careful not to overfill, which will cause foaming and fluid loss.
If the drained fluid is discolored (brown or black), thick, or smells burnt, serious transmission troubles, probably due to overheating, should be suspected. Your car's transaxle should be inspected by a reliable transmission specialist to determine the problem.

How to change the transmission oil, and how many quarts to use, knowing that the SUV has what is called a sealed transmission.

Basically, these transmissions are filled using what's called a "double fill" technique. There are two drain plugs, one which actually drains the pan, and another that has an overflow collar inside that sets the level. You basically pump transmission fluid in with the engine off and the overflow plug out, until the fluid starts to flow out of the plug. Then start the engine and let it idle, pump in more fluid again until it starts to overflow again, and then replace the drain plug. This is supposed to be done with the ATF at approx. 40deg C, or basically just warm to the touch. You will likely need around 4 qts of fluid.

I was wondering if I could change my oil and transmission fluid in my car (09 Charger) myself or if i would have to take it to the shop to do so. I changed both in my old car but my boyfriend says that I...

Engine oil and filter are certainly accessible, and they get changed just like your old car. Transmission fluid may not since many newer cars do not put a drain plug in the transmission pan. Your boyfriend is correct on that one. Shops use a suction pump to vacuum out the old fluid, or they lift the car, drop the transmission pan to drain the fluid, and replace the pan gasket (and filter if you so choose) before reattaching the pan and replacing the fluid.

I'm a woman trying to teach myself how to maintain my own car. I have a 2009 Dodge Journey 3.5 v6. I wanted to know basic instructions on how to change the oil myself? any help pls?

You could try some YouTube videos on similar models.
Its a messy job, and for most people easier to pay someone to do.
You have to remove the drain plug from the oil pan to drain the oil into a pan, then dispose of it safely, and change the filter, then refill the oil pan with new oil.

Want to change transmission fluid and filter

I took mine to a shop for a flush and filter change. Costed me about $240 all said and done give or take. the '03 (and other) denali's have a big transmission reserve and i believe they take approximately 16 quarts of fluid in the system. the trans fluid is around 7 a quart i believe, and I recommend a flush to replace all the fluid with new fluid before changing the filter so that when you change the filter out, you are running new fluid through it. I don't know how to flush the system without their special tool that straight swaps the fluid as the ****** is running, so that will have to be done by a shop anyways. As for the filter swap, I believe the filter is about $29 and you'll need approx 7-8 quarts of fluid to replace when you drop the transmission pan.

All in all, in fluid alone you will be spending approximately $175. $29 for a filter. let the shop make a few bucks and have it done by pros. I know they get discount on the fluids, but I figure I still spent $35 more than doing it myself for an hour or two of work. Not a horrific deal to be honest.

Do not know how to check transmission fluid for an 2000 audi a8 quattro

Audis and VW Passats (basically an Audi A4 with a VW nameplate) do not have any provision for checking the A/T fluid. I could not accept this myself, so I went to multiple dealers and mechanics, and they all gave me the same answer.

The claim is that the Audi transmission is supplied as a "sealed unit" and they should never need their fluid checked or changed until they need to be rebuilt.

The transmission seems to slip when going in reverse in my Ford Explorer 1994 (OK going forward). Transmission fluid is OK.

have one myself w/over 400.000 miles suggest you change transmission fluid and filter, just add lucas transmission treatment to your fluid change. never had problems w.mine. but firm beleiver in lucas oil and transmission and fuel treatments. just trying to see how far i can go w/mine. the lucas treatment added to your fluid and transmission fluid and filter change frees up stuck valves in the transmission. sounds alot like you may have a stuck valve body in the transmission to me.pull your transmission fluid dip stick, this is going to sound strange but go with me for a second please, does the fluid smell burnt? do'nt be scared to put it on your finger and sniff it. if it smells like burnt expletitive, then it needs replaced and filter too. just please add lucas transmission treatment to your fluid change, you will not regret it. the treatment [lucas] will cost an extra $11.00 onto the fluid change, trust me, you will not regret it!fluid changes are a must for ford explorers 4x4 don't know why,but they demand baby formula. lucas,i've found is that formula. thank you for choosing fixya.com we are here 24/7 for you 7days

There are multiple possibilities that could cause it. Your best bet would probably be to take it to a mechanic for a tune-up. If you wanted to do it yourself then you could:
- Change the spark plugs
- Change your timing belt
- Transmission fluid change (if its never been changed)
- Check your air filter and change if dirty
- Could also to the tensioner, roller and water pump - but I'd advise the above options first

I want to service my vehicle

If you want to do a full service:
Change oil and filter
Change fuel filter
New spark plugs
Check all fluids:
Transmission fluid
Brake fluid
Power steering fluid
Coolant (anti-freeze)
Rotate tires, and do a grease job, you will need a grease gun for that.
If you want just the minor
Change oil and filter
fuel filter, and spark plugs.

1998 4.3l chevrolet truck.auto transmission started slipping.

Myself I would give the fluid filter change a shot.
If the fluid still looks good then most likely you haven't smoked any clutches. It could just be the filter is clogged and not picking up fluid properly.
Of course it is possible that it is something more serious.
Parts store should be able to hook you up with correct filter and probably capacity.

Check your manual, but you may not have one. Quite a few newer cars no longer have dipsticks for the trans fluid.
