This is not a major problem, as the system works wonderfully with the exception of having to tap the disc drive after pressing the button in order for it to continue opening. It opens fine if it is set on its side, or if it is upright with a game in it.
I am not about to send it into microsoft for this simple problem, and I know it is a common problem, I would like to know if anyone has had this problem and if there is any way to fix it yourself without voiding the warranty.

First off, you might need your windows operating system disc.
1. Turn on your laptop
2. Start tapping on F2 once you see the Dell Logo
3. Once your inside BIOS go to Boot options or Boot menu
4. Change the boot priority, make the CD the top priority.
5. Once you're done with step 5, insert the operating system disc into your CD/DVD drive
6. Press F10 (Save and Exit). The laptop will then restart.
7. Check if it will boot from the OS disc, if it does, then there's no problem with your optical drive. If it did not boot from the operating system disc, then there's a big chance that your CD/DVD drive is already broken.
Note : if you're not satisfied with the steps above, you might want to try 2 operating system discs. You don't have to install them on the laptop, we just need to use it to verify if the CD/DVD drive is already broken and needs to be replaced.
With my experience as a technical support, usually this kinds of symptoms(the things that you mentioned) says that the DVD drive is already broken or defective.
Hope this helps!
Here are the steps on how to install operating system using the recovery disc - power on the computer and insert the disc - once the disc is inserted, turn off the computer - press the power button then after 2 seconds tap F12 repeatedly - select the cd/dvd option or ODD (optical disc drive) use the up and down arrow keys - press enter - once you see "press any key to boot from CD" press enter right away it will show " Loading Windows" - then after the next phase will be set of on screen instructions, you just have to select the right option.
To reformat your computer, you would need a recovery disc or a stand alone operating system.

Hi, Your computer is not able to detect the hard drive on which your operating system is loaded. Either the hard drive has gone bad or boot device priority has changed. Try tapping ESC while turning the computer on you will get the force boot options :select the HDD group and try to boot the computer. Disconnect all the external bootable devices such as external Hard drive. It will give you the information whether the hard drive is working or not. Still if the computer is not booting than there might be an issue with the Hard drive.
We are going to do this the easy way....you need a computer of course and one that has a working cd/dvd player, a flash drive and a windows installation disc. A recovery disc will not work...you need a windows installation disc.
Go to the control panel > folder options > click on the "View" tab, scroll down and UN-check the box the says "hide protected operating system files", now click the bubble above that says "Show hidden files and folders.
Now get out of the control panel and insert the windows disc in the drive.
Go ahead and insert the flash drive into a usb port and let windows recognize the device and load it. It will give the device a drive letter.
After the disc loads, it may appear on your desktop and say to install Windows....just exit the program but don't eject the disc. Open "My Computer" and look for your cd/dvd drive and right click on it. Choose "open" from the choices and a list of files and folders will appear. Select all the files except for a file that says "desktop
Copy all the files and paste them into the flash drive that you can find in "My Computer" The files from the disc will now be written to the flash drive. Once the copy is completed, the flash drive can now be used to boot the computer.
Insert the usb drive into the laptop that needs fixing and power it up. After the flash screen appears, tap the F12 key to bring up the multi-boot options. Choose USB drive and hit enter. The laptop will boot off the usb drive and initiate the Windows files.
what disc your using to boot?
just leave bootable disc in the dvd drive such as OS and drivers dell disc.
power off then on the laptop keep tap on F12 then select onboard CD/DVD ROM then press enter then tap space bar.
if still not reading any disc then have you dvd drive replace.
To do this simply insert the game onto the drive and go to the menu where it shows the game disc.
Press Y on the image of the game and select "Install to Hard Drive".
After the game finishes install select "Play From Hard Drive"
If the game fails to install try cleaning the disc with warm water NOT hot or cold water but WARM. After that dry the disc with a soft towel or some sort of SOFT cloth by wiping away from the center of the disc.
