This is not a major problem, as the system works wonderfully with the exception of having to tap the disc drive after pressing the button in order for it to continue opening. It opens fine if it is set on its side, or if it is upright with a game in it.
I am not about to send it into microsoft for this simple problem, and I know it is a common problem, I would like to know if anyone has had this problem and if there is any way to fix it yourself without voiding the warranty.

I have never heard this issue before. You probably have a lager issue then what can be resolved here and might face future issue in the future. Is this the only game you are having issues with?
Seeing that you mentioned you have purchased a hard drive then I would recommend you install the game to your hard drive and try play after that. This will resolve any issues possably of your disk drive possably getting hung up during gameplay.
follow these instructions to get your game installed on your hard drive:
Install Xbox 360 games on your hard drive from a game disc
Note Installing an Xbox 360 game on a hard drive requires between 4 and 8 gigabytes (GB) of free disc space.
Insert the game disc into the disc drive.
Note After you insert the disc, the default option is to automatically start the game. If the game starts, exit the game, and return to the Xbox Dashboard.
From the Xbox Dashboard, go to My Xbox.
Select the game you want to install.
Press Y on your controller.
Select Install to Hard Drive.
A progress indicator appears while your game is being installed on your hard drive.
Installing an Xbox 360 game might take several minutes.
Multidisc game? Install each disc to your hard drive.
If you hear the drive making noise as if it is trying to push the disc out and just cannot, try facing the facing the system down with the disc drive towards the floor and press the eject button. If it doesn't work the first time, try a few more times until the disc comes out.
Hi,Clear the system cache: 1. On the console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings. 2. Select Memory. 3. Highlight any storage device, and then press Y on your controller. 4. Select Clear System Cache. If Clear System Cache is not available, use the following controller button sequence to clear the system cache: X, X, left bumper, right bumper, X, X Note If you don't see a system maintenance prompt on the screen, try pressing the button sequence again. Try playing discs without the hard drive in: 1. Turn off your console. 2. Locate the hard drive on your console. Press the release button on the hard drive and lift the hard drive from the console. Turn on your console. 3. Try to play a game disc. If this resolves the problem, you will need to replace the hard drive. If not, do the same thing for your memory units. If it works without them, the they may be bad. Thank you!
To do this simply insert the game onto the drive and go to the menu where it shows the game disc.
Press Y on the image of the game and select "Install to Hard Drive".
After the game finishes install select "Play From Hard Drive"
If the game fails to install try cleaning the disc with warm water NOT hot or cold water but WARM. After that dry the disc with a soft towel or some sort of SOFT cloth by wiping away from the center of the disc.
Alright, this means that your disc drive went out.... the part runs approximate 50 bucks off of ebay... that includes shipping and handling... YES! model # for disc drive must be EXACTLY the same... it will say right on your disc drive what kind you need.... For a tutorial on taking your xbox 360 apart... go to this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj2A7mGGjuY&feature=related .. Alright after that.... DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT THROW AWAY YOUR OTHER DISC DRIVE... YOU WILL NEED IT!. or at least the chip from the inside.. This video shows you exactly what to do with your new and old disc drive.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_xSsNmjqKI&feature=channel . I had this exact same issue and it works wonders now. you see the chip in your old disc drive has memory for your specific xbox ... since each is unique... GOOD LUCK! :D
