I have a Toro LX425 riding mower with a new battery. Tries to turn over for a few seconds and then the battery is dead. Jump started with a car battery. Fired up fine. Ran for 45 minutes cutting grass. When done, I shut it off and tried to restart. No luck. Is there a charging system on these? Does the starter double as an alternator/generator?

    I'm answering your questions:

"Is there a charging system on these?"

Yes. There is a wire/circuit run from the magneto to the battery.

"Does the starter double as an alternator/generator?"

    No.

Do you have a voltmeter? Have you measured the voltage across the terminals of your battery?

It sounds like the battery is dead, and it also sounds like your charging system has a fault.

My Toro LX425 riding mower will not start has been fine all season; battery indicator light on but wont turn over; starter?

First make sure your battery is fully charged. The charger on lawn tractors will not keep the battery fully charged as they just produce a light charge. Check battery before the starter but if battery is fully charged then it's possible the starter could be bad.

Batt dead jump start does not seem to charge

Sounds like a dead or shorted cell battery. Charging system is probably working but is showing overcharge since it is trying to charge a brick. Replace the battery and all should be well.

How do I get instructions on replacing both upper and lower drive belts on a LX425 Toro Lawn Tractor?

You can go to Toro.com and look at the lower left side for "Homeowner" or "commercial" parts. If you enter your model number you can get an owners manual online. I tried your LX425, but didn't come up. Maybe a different number?

Toro lx425 rider mower wont start

If a small engine wont start its usually one of two problems, its not getting gas, or its not getting spark. easy way to find out if its getting a spark is to remove the plug, put it back back in the connector and just let it hang down while you try to start it. you should see a bright blue spark, if you dont try changing the spark plug. if its getting a spark come back on this site and i'll help you trouble shoot it.
