Question about Toshiba TP50G60 50" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

Color convergence Hi. My T.V. is actually a TP50F60 built on 11/96; chassis #tac9675. Colors are off. Convergence red adjusts OK but blue won't adjust horizontally but will vertically. I replaced 2 IC's STK's110. No change in problem. Can you tell me what else may be the problem. If this makes any sense, I tried service code. It gave a no.23905485; power:002; bus line ok; bus cont. ok; block:uv v1 v2 qv01 qvo1s(in red) Thankyou for any help. leewest

Hi ,Thankyou for your reply. I am not experienced with your reply. What does this mean and how do i go about doing this.
    Thanks agan LeeWest

When I replaced the two STK's, I had a look at the resistors and board with a magnifying glass and saw no burn marks or discoloration.
Also all the solder joins looked good.
I have nothing to tell me the values of the capacitors or resistors and have not been able to find a repair manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Leewest

Hi;  Mike NJ 1964 directed me to test and replace 2 burnt transistors. I got most of the colours looking good and convergence cross lines up now but some areas are still off.

Went into service mode convergence grid and the area's are off. I can get the flashing square to these areas no problem but I can't get lines to move to line up on grid.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated......LeeWest

Usually, what happens in those sets is that one of the STK output IC's shorts out.  Each IC has 3 separate channels, and one of the channels shorts out, which sends B+ or B- to the convergence coil.  This burns out the low-value resistor associated with that channel.  If the bad IC is replaced but the resistor is not, that channel will continue to not work.  Look for 3 large resistors right next to each IC.  These resistors are 1 or 2 watt resistors, have a value of about 1.8 ohms and sometimes are under the heat sink fins that the IC is bolted to.  Measure all 6 resistors with an ohm meter and you will probably find one of them is open.  Replace that resistor and your colors should return to their normal positions.

you cant see if resistors or capacitors are in change value! only ohm meter tester can testify what is the value of the said parts!

Thats the way it works. You have to adjust the other colors to the red. You adjust the red from the back of the set using the convergence magnets on the tubes. Then you adjust the other colors to match the red. It's much easier if you have the plastic screen from Toshiba used to align this set.

The red color seems to be sperating itself from the actual picture. The logos on screen are showing up as double image. pls advise what could be the problem

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

How do i make all the colors sync up to get rid of yellow and blue shadowing

Go into the customer menu with the remote and select convergence; if red or blue will not adjust in some direction you have a convergence circuit problem----depending on actual model number set uses two convergence chips--they would have to be replaced.

If the convergence does adjust in the customer menu but not good enough I can give you the sequence to get into the tech menu to fine adjust-remember if if will not adjust in the customer mode, it will not adjust in the tech mode either.

See attached photo of Philips convergence problem.

If this told you something you did not know, rate this solution as I do this here for free.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

I was just given this t.v because friends couldn't figure out what is wrong with itl. The colors don't line up right, looks kinda blurry depending on the lighting of the program being watched. How do i fix...

According to the manual:
1) go to the "TV Main Menu"
2) Select "Screen"
3) Select Adjust Projection TV (obviously only if a projection TV).
This then allows you to adjust the TV's 3-colors. Selecting GREEN CENTERING brings up a control panel that lets you center the green projection tube on the screen. Selecting RED CONVERGENCE or BLUE CONVERGENCE lets you align the Red & Blue projector tubes. Centre the green projector tube 1st. Then adjust the red & blue until the test pattern on the TV screen appers white.
Good Luck!

The Screen looks 3D & Colors don't line up on my big screen????

If the convergence is off more than 1/2 inch or so you can't adjust. you have a failure of hardware. most likely the output IC. This set has 2 outputs for convergence. Each output contains 3 circuits, Six circuits altogether 2 red ,2 blue and 2 green. The normal customer adjustment will only alow adjustment of blue and red. They should be converged onto the green. There is a much more complex adjustment in the service mode for Geometry and convergence. These adjustments are only needed when you replace a failed componnent like the output ic. These ICs have been upgraded several times since the production of this set. The latest and most powerfull version is STK394-160. If feel up to it I suggest changing both outputs and the corresponding output resistors. Then do a complete geometry and convergence alignment.
