Question about Brother IntelliFAX 885MC Plain Paper Thermal transfer Fax

1 Answer

Black Smear I have a Brother IntelliFAX 950M. I get a 1 1/2 inch block of vertical black bars, separated by small white lines, on the left side of the page about a half-inch from the edge of the paper. I've cleaned everything I can see inside per the manual, tightened the cartridge ribbon and looked for anything that would cause that one section to always smear. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Black Smear

Go to page13-9 routine maintenance section, where it says to clean the glass strip on top of it there is a white plate (shown) does that plate have ANY dirt or spots etc......?
It MUST be completely WHITE or it will give you black streaks. if it cannot be cleaned then use white out to cover. ( makesure it is completely dry before using).

Line goes through page when fax is sent

Open up the document feeder and clean the small glass. If the line is more than 1/4 inch wide you have a bad scanner block.

Sent faxes have the right side cut off and black lines on side of paper, have cleaned white bar and glass

Sounds like the scanner section (the glass **** part in the original scan section). These are notorious for going out and sending partial black or all black pages. Try making a copy and see what it looks like, but if it's sharp lines on (across) sections of the copies, then that's what it is. It's about a $40 part and easy to change. Just lift the "tab" on the holders right side....slide the unit to the right...lift up the left section...pull it out and unplug it. Be carefull not to let the connector fall into the slot it came from or you'll have to disassemble it further or fish it out. Replace in opposite directions.

A bar code stripe on the right side of the copy.

i'm not sure if you're talking about a solid black band or a bunch of little stripes running down page. does it happen when you run an internal report or only on copies? if its a black solid band, check and make sure the bluish colored tab on top of the drum is all the way to the left side. if its a group of fine lines, depending on whether it happens on internal reports or not, it could be the drum is going bad or you may have a bad scanner. write back with a little more info if this suggestion doesn't work.

good luck,

Black line about 1 1/2 inches wide down side of faxes or copies

if your RECEIVED faxes look good, then leroyal is dead on. you will need a new CIS which stands for contact image sensor. if you have an authorized brother service center nearby, they may be able to do it for 100 to 150.00, depending on their pricing of course. if rec'd faxes are bad also, pull drum out and make sure the blue tab on top of drum is all the way to the right side, although that usually only leaves about a 1/2" black band.
