Dont open your hard drive. precision components will be ruined if opened in anything other than a cleanroom environment.

WD1600bevs drive not seen by windows. Disk cloning software saw drive but thought it was a 2 TB drive.

Are you trying to install a new hard drive for new storage space or are you trying to move a hard drive with files on it that you intend to keep?

New drive with no files:
Right click my computer and select manage, choose "disk management" in the left pane, see if there is a drive listed with "unallocated space", if so, partition the drive, format it, and windows will assign it a drive letter.

Drive with files to keep:
Upon starting your computer, enter the BIOS or "setup" (usually by pressing f2, tab, escape, or some other key...but it should tell you what key to press), make sure the drive is detected in the system bios (make sure the SATA port that the drive is plugged into is turned ON) . Make sure the drive is plugged into power as well as data. Try a known good SATA cable.

Hi.

If the hard disk been opened unfortunately you lost your data. You can try to send it to a data recovery company but it will cost few thousand bucks to get your data out of the disk plates.

Opening a hard drive to check it out is 99.99% chances of fail because of dust. If you can fix what was wrong and put everything back together and plug it the head will hit the dust at 7200 RPM and it's like a plane crashing on a mountain.

Good luck anyways.

Fogit it - you are fcked.

Only alternative you have at this juncture is to avail yourself of a data recovery service at great expense.

Sometimes a repair operation or diagnostic test on a finicky drive could permanently trash the unit or make it worse. That is apparently what happened to your drive.

In the future this incident should impress on you the fact that a hard drive backup of important data is always a must. All hard drives from the moment of manufacture start to die - we just do not know when!

I bought a new WD1600BEVS drive to go in a laptop but when I put it in and try to install Windows XP it only shows 54GB available out of the 160GB on the drive.

Tell the Windows Install to DELETE the current partition.
Then, tell it to create a new partition, and it will use the entire 160GB.
