Same kind of problem. SimpleTech external hard drive where I saved thousands of pictures. When I turn it on the computer does not recognize the drive, and red and blue lights go on the hard drive. The hard drive makes a clicking sound as if it is trying to read but nothing happens. Desperately trying to see what I can do.

The drive worked yesterday, but today it won't register in "My Computer" today.... eeeeeeeeeeek.

Hopefully the data is not lost. Any suggestions?

Same problem here!!! The blue light comes on and stays on as though the Drive is thinking. It also freezes my CPU. Hopefully the solution works.

WOW!! I was out of options and was desperate to find a fix for my External. So i took it out of its case and looked it over like the other solution states. I decided to plug it in while it ws out of its case, and i began squeezing it among other things. Finally when i pushed on the area on the bottom where you can see the disk is located, it grinded for a second. After that my drive started to work again!!!!!!! Unreal i thought i ws gonna lose everything i had. Id recommend trying this as a last resort and it dont take alot of pressure, just press on it until you feel the disk vibrate.

Hope this helps someone else as well.

Sounds like the drive is physically damaged. I would extract the drive form the case, and test it. If the ports on the enclosure are faulty, theres is nothing to do about it except resolder them.......
Your youre concerned about the case and not the content on the drive, verify whether it is under warranty and return it.

Keep me posted.

I dropped my drive and now the computer won't recognize it. The blue light is on with the red light. Help!

Sorry to hear that your drive is having trouble. When you start the drive, do you hear it turning?
Is this a external that you can remove the hard drive? You may try to power down the external, power it back up and shut down your computer. The conect the external and turn the computer on.

Let me know if you can hear the driver turning and it you can connect after going thru the process above.

first things you have to do is that test the external drive with another system if it works then reload your system i.e format your harddisk and reload it with your operating system.

My iomega 500gb external hard drive has a broken.

My Iomega (33654) 500GB USB isn't working. When I turn it on the blue light comes on for a few seconds. I can hear / feel it working but then the light goes off (it is still whirring inside). The computer isn't recognising it. I think it's still under guarantee but I can't find the paperwork. Do you have any ideas?

The hard drive won't boot up

the hard drive is dead ( dreaded click of ***** syndrome )
you can have that verified at a computer repair shop and if that is the case use a solid state hard drive as a replacement and not the spinning disc type as for the data you have stored , there are places than can recover it from the dead hard drive but unless you have it all backed up on an external hard drive or storage device then it is lost

Lights on but no one at home

you'll need to add it in my computer, as a logical external drive...

and when plugging into usb, recommend plugging in when it's powered down, not when it's active.
