When a cylinder head cracks it is necessary remove it from the vehicle to properly diagnose. Symptoms of a cracked head while on the car would include coolant and engine oil mixing making brown slushie oil (looks like chocolate milk) or nasty dark coolant, the vehicle may consume either coolant or oil, or there may be a misfire check engine light on. These concerns may be either a cracked head or head gasket, however the head needs removed to properly diagnose either. Once the head is off it is best to send it to a repair facility to test it properly and replace the gasket regardless.

How to tell if you have a cracked block are blown head

This may be impossible without disassembly. If you were lucky and the crack is external, you could observe where leak is, but internal only leaks can be from a blown head gasket, cracked head or cracked block. Most common is head gasket, next head, and last block. Since anyone of these can cause water to enter the oil circuit, or oil to enter water, I know of no way to tell which is bad without a teardown.

How tell if you have a cracked block are a blown Head gasket

Gaskets will blow way before a cracked block or head. I have only seen 2 cracked blocks. Both where because there wasn't coolant in the engine. Straight water in sub zero weather.

How do i tell if i have a cracked head on a 1990 nissan terrano diesel

Have a coolant pressure test done and compression test done. There is a real possibility of a cracked head but you may be lucky with just a warped head and blown gasket.

Mercruser 350 water in oil

Probably have a bad head or intake gasket. Check cylinder pressure will help tell you that. If not, probably have a cracked head, possibly intake. Could also be cracked block. If block is cracked, save re-usuable parts. Should be able to find replacement head(s) if necessary.

How can u tell if your head is cracked

Had a work truck that had a cracked head when i checked the oil it was a weird light gray color like if you take a pencil to lightly shade in a sketch that color. Was told water got in the oil due to the cracked head and that's why it looked like that. Hope this helps.

Hi there how can i tell if i cracked my engine block on a mitsubishi magna/verada 1998 can see coolant between the heads but dont know where its coming from

Blocks rarely crack, heads do crack more often. Most likely you have blown a gasket. Unless you can see coolant coming from a crack , you will have to disassemble it to find out

Head gaskets

There is really no difference between a blown or cracked head gasket. In either case the gasket would have to be replaced. Generally the term "cracked" is used when referring specifically to the cylinder head/s its/them selves. If the cylinder head is cracked it is a much more expensive repair.

How do i tell if the heads creaked on a 91 celica

a cracked head or blown head gasket, will cause your vehicle to have a miss in the cylander where the crack is or where the gasket is blown. you can also see coolant leaking if the gasket is blown. you can also see water in the oil,and white smoke come from the exhaust.
to tell for sure that the head is cracked, and not just a blown gasket is to remove the head. you will instantly see if the gasket is blown. if its not, then turn the head upside down and look at the small space between the valves,as this is where 99% of cracks occur.

Cracked Head???

not necessarily be a cracked head but this is an indication that the head gasket is blown out
the only way to tell if its a cracked is by a machine shop milling the top layer off the head this will show in a milling that you do or you dont have a cracked head

if its cracked head you have several options dealer head brand new
remanufactured head from any auto parts store
junk yard head 50/50 chance that these heads are cracked too

mostly i think right now its just a bad head gasket have them replace both head gaskets when they do the heads better for vehicle so you dont have to run into problem again with head gaskets
