Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Zenith TV I have a Zenith 27" color TV made in 1989, model #SF5765H. Recently, the picture started to shrink and expand from the sides of the screen. It is intermittent, but happens often. Can it be fixed without too much cost, or should I buy a new one?

Regular picture size shrinks and color fades

This is a common problem on certain models of Philips Magnavox TV sets. The most common symptom is the screen will shrink and expand over and over. After the TV heats up for a while the video will work like normal. After a few weeks or months your TV will eventually stop working and not have video. Screen is cutting off the sides

That is an ITC008 chassis and the problem you're referring to is called a breathing picture. One fault I am aware of in this chassis/model is the connector Bl103. I have seen a couple where the connector failed and had to be replaced. Could open it up and locate the conntector and see if it's vibration sensitive.

Resolder the vertical deflection section. Change pump up capacitor if it has one...100uf is a typical value. Is the vertical output some flavor of LA783x ?? May need to replace. A model # would help.

Since you can bang it to heal it some, try checking for cold solder joints. Caps and IC's next. Careful TV's store up to 3000 K volts unplugged. Enuff to kill.

Shrinked picture of 29 inch television.

It is a pincushion problem. There is a bad cap and or a bad diode in the horzontal section.
