We have a IBM 7208-011 10Gb 8mm. tape.
The copy with cpio command takes about 12 hours for 1.5 Gb. of data.
The same copy with tar command takes about 1/3 of cpio's time.
But the main problem is that the copy is not secure. Frecuently when we
verify the copy we find some errors. We've tried with new and old tapes.
This tape is connected to a RS/6000 model 360 which haves: 2 Gb IBM Disk, 2
Gb HP Disk and 9 Gb Micropolis Disk.
If somebody has news of some similar incident or knows the solution please
answer us.

Yes, the 8mm tapes drives that IBM uses are made by Exabyte. You can even
get a software download for the drive, to change to Eprom to a bootable
tape drive. Just call tech support and ask them about that.
Also, FYI, the 128port controller, and RANS are made by Digiboard.

Would that be Exabyte tech support or IBM tech support?
Thanks...

In article <01bbca42$b6198a40$9e295 @IBM.ibm.net>, "Jos?? Enrique Cebamanos"
[stuff deleted]
try out the <backup> and <restore> commands and set the block size to
1024 (it saves backup time). We have the same tape drive and the above
works for us without any problems. Hope this helps.
Greetings, Lothar

Exabyte 5GB and it works fine. What I can tell you is, that in some
cases you can read the tapes again on another day or in another tape
drive, although you haven't see any datas some time before.

advise you to try the AIX backup command. The performance is a lot
better than cpio or other stuff. Average backup-speed of 1MB/sec is
possible.
Success,
