Question about Nikon Coolpix 3700 Digital Camera

Lens error displayed by coolpix 3700

So I turn on my coolpix in shooting mode and the screen displays "Lens error". This happens every time I turn it on. Every other function of the camera works though. I tried switching the battery with a fully charged one. It was of no avail. The lens still don't come out. I desperatly hope I can save my camera with out having to send it to a shop for repair. I don't know how much this would cost. Maybe it would be better to buy a new one? Hope you can help, thanks

I too have the same problem. Had this a year back but than the lens didn't close and after a day it just started working. Now the lens won't open . It happened after I recharged the battery for 15 mins and started again.Tried closing and opening, removing battery etc but didnt work and am not sure whether use of force is going to damage it

With the lens facing downward, hit the camera a sharp tap against the palm of the hand whilst simultaneously turning the camera 'ON'. If that fails, tap against a stiffer surface (desk or table), allowing room for the lens to extend and taking care not to damage the body of the camera.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 3700 camera which had a LENS ERROR message on display when opened.
I tried various from site ie;taking out the battery and then the memory card and then inserting the battery etc, nothing worked.
Then I tried powering on the unit and at the same time shacking it/hitting it on my thigh and couple of goes at this....... boom the shutter opened up ! Then I powered it off/on several times to test if it works and YES it works perfectly fine. Hope this helps.....

Yes, After trying all else this worked. Unfortunately, before doing this I sucked at the shutter with my vacuum cleaner and dislodged it. Although I retrieved it from the vacuum debris and replaced it as well as I could, the shutter now stays open permanently. I cant really see how the mechanism works. I have seated in the shutter mechanism and put back the ring that holds it in place, but there is a supposedly crucial bit of fine wire that seems part of the mechanism and I cant see how that works. Any suggestions?

I was in Nice, France and had the "Lens Error" after changing the battery. recharging the original battery did not resolve the issue. After gently knocking the body several times with no result I was ready to ditch the camera in the middle of my vacation when my sister in law suggested placing the camera in the fridge as perhaps it had overheated - it was 38 degees C. Iwas skeptical but with nothing to loose I tried this and after 1/2 hr tried the camera and lo and behold it was cured and has continued to do so. I would however recommend taking the battery out of the camera before using this method as any humidity could cause the camera to short circuit. Good luck

No image is captured by the screen itself (LCD screen works but completely dark).

Did you try pressing the display button several times? in both viewing mode and record mode? Cycle through all display modes, s you get used to the button, so it does not trow you off when it happens again.

BUT continue option is not display on screen only display LENS ERROR

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

The Camera displays lens error only when it's unable to retract or expand. This usually happens when the internal Hardware that controls the lens fails or any dust particle settles around the lens. In this case, just give slight bumps to the Camera against your palm. If the issue persists then service will be required.

My coolpix displays lens error when it is turned on. The lens opens and closes twice before the display reads lens error.

his generally happens if you have dropped it. when the message comes. try tapping the camera. if it works then you are lucky. if not then you have to change the lens array. it costs about 60$
