I have a D3100 and am trying the AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6G ED from a relative. It is on A and the VR is ON. When I try to take a picture it squeals. What do I need to do?

Please provide the more data such as your ISO sensitivity and shutter speed. And if possible upload the non-edited image.

SOURCE: When i shoot a group of people (20) the people on

Edge to edge focus is an ongoing debate with every photographer that has run into it. A flat field of view is possible if you have deep pockets, a tilt shift lens, view camera in 4x5 or computer programing that will pull this out in post processing. I'm not trying to give you a smart answer but the amount of Barrel distortion and pin cushion effects on an 18mm wide angle lens will be difficult to correct. What I've done with huge groups to minimize the problem is use rows of people Kneeling, sitting and standing to minimize the effect and try to shot it loose then crop in. What this does is uses more of the center of the lens and also use F8 or F11

Could you confirm that this is a G lens (without an aperture ring)? If so, try cleaning the electrical contacts on the back of the lens and in the lens mount on the camera.

I have a Nikon D3100 and want to buy a zoom lens 70-300.Please help I am confused is a Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G compatible? And is it automatic focus?

That lens will work with the D3100, except for the autofocusing. In order to autofocus with the D3100, you need AF-S lenses, such as the AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED or the
AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR.

Nikon Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Vs. Nikon Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX are they the same len or not? thanks, Ricky at rpotter@eatel.net

No. The VR lens has 15 elements in 11 groups, the other has 13 elements in 9 groups. This indicates that the two lenses have different optical designs. The main difference, however, is that the VR indicates "vibration reduction." This lens has motion sensors and tiny motors that move the lens elements to compensate for camera motion, producing clearer pictures when hand-holding the camera.
