If the defrost element is working the you have to totally defrost the evaporator, kick it back into life & all should be ok. Air intruding into freezer could be the cause of the frost, make shure the seals are ok & in place, make sure the doors are closing all the way.

This is the third time this has happened so just clearing away the ice is a temp solution. The question is what is causing the buildup on top of the evaporator. I tend to think it is a bad thermistor.

Ok, if frost is only appearing on the top of the evaporator & the bottom is totally clear you probably have a low gas problem

  • Brian Coughlan Nov 21, 2013

Add a CommentThere should be an even layer of light frost over the entire evap when operating efficiently.

Why would low freon cause ice buildup? I should add that the ice surrounds the pipe leading to the evaporator but not the coils themselves. I still think it is sensor or perhaps the main board.

  • Brian Coughlan Nov 23, 2013

Whatever, low gas means that there is not enough to flood the evap so just the inlet pipes frost up.

Do you see any ice build up on the back wall of the freezer compartment? You probably have one of the following problems: A failed defrost system, meaning the defrost timer and/or element has gone out and your evaporator coil is frozen over; you are low on freon and this too will cause your evap coil to freeze over until the freon drops so low all cooling stops; or there could be a clog in the capillary tube which is the very small diamiter copper tube that carries the condensed liquid freon to the evap coil. Unless you have gauges, a licence to buy freon and service valves (or a buddy with such) you are limited to what you can do. Here is my advice:1. unplug the frig and let it defrose over night, unplug the frig and empty the freezer to remove the back cover to look for ice, a frozen fan and if so get your hair dryer out and melt the ice so you can test the fan and the defrost element (you will need a volt/ohm meter to do the element check. You can do it.

Our GE profile freezer/frig - frig side has ice on coils

Sounds like the automatic defrost system is not working. The usual problem is the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, or the defrost timer. If any of these parts are bad, it will not defrost.

Yes, Airflow is what cools the frig. Check for frost buildup on the coils indicating a problem in the defrost components r a fan not running fast enough. Eric

You have a defrost problem. Common problem on most frost free refrigerators because the ice buildup does not allow efficient heat transfer to evaporator coil. You will need to remove the cover in the back of the freezer compartment (you know , where you scraped of the ice). When you remove panel you will see a buildup of ice on your evaporator coil. This will have to be thawed out by hairdryer or some other means before you move onto next step.Next you will see a heater element (black thingy ) or glass tubes with internal elements .These are your defrost heaters. They can usaully be visually inspected but best to use an ohmeter to check continuity. If you have good heaters you will want to put frig into defrost by manually turning the defrost timer clockwise untill you hear frig cut off. (Look for timer inside right frig compartment next to thermostat.) power will now be diverted to heaters and will get hot for duration of defrost cycle. If defrost thermostat is bad this could be the case of problem( round looking disk thingy clamped to coil and wired before heater) You can check by bypassing the defrost therm directly to heater and see if heater works while in defrost cycle. You will want to replace it as this is the device that turns off the heater so as not to overheat and melt plastic in freezer.Just reinstall everthing and you should be good to go.

Ice buildup on the coil and ice buildup on freezer floor

you will have to unclogg it..hot water/hairdryer..flexible tubing to push out the clog. the ice on evap coil bothers me though. do all the coils get frosty white(close the door for 10 minutes then check) I fear they aren't and you have a freon leak.

Refrigerator on the fritz

The defroster is not working. Ice build up prevents cold air from the freezer chest from blowing into the lower part.

The way the defroster works is this: There is a defrost timer, probably found under the refrigerator at the front, that turns on the defroster three times per day or so. That turns on a heater nested among the freezer coils. It keeps heating until the defrost thermostat gets warm; then it quits defrosting.

I think your defrost timer doesn't turn. You can turn it with a screw driver till you hear a click. Now your ice compartment should be defrosting. With ice buildup it may need lots and lots of defrosting. You might not get cooling back into the lower part for awhile, till the ice buildup melts.

By the preceding, you should know if the defrost timer needs replacing.

If you should need to manually defrost the freezer coils, they are, I think, under the floor of the freezer. To defrost them, I'm told, a hair drier works better than boiling water. The defrost thermostat is in there too, a one inch unit with two wires. It should have no continuity warm, closed circuit frozen. If it has open circuit frozen, that would be your problem.

Frig won't cool, freezer works fine

Defrost unit completely. You're frosting up. Then, avoid leaving the door open, leaving liquids and food uncovered. Clean condenser coils. If it happens again, you need refrigerant.
