You have something wrapped on the compactor screw assembly (The assembly is a threaded rod about 24 inches long and 3/4 inch in diameter. ). Most likely it is plastic bag or some other plastic. Pull the entire compactor out (remove the hold down screws first). Then look for the obstruction on the screw assembly, cut it off and try while not in the compactor hole to make sure it works.

How do I choose the right compactor for the job I'm planning to do?

It all really depends on what you want to do. There are three main types of plate compactors.
1. single-plate compactors only go in the forward direction, this is good for a small project like a laying asphalt.
2. Reversible plates are able to go forward and backwards.
3. High performance and heavy duty plate compactors which are usually used for deeper compaction projects.

For your at home project you should be fine with a single-plate compactor.

Here is an assembly drawing of your compactor.. Please note item # 102 ( direction switch) ..That may be affecting the perfomance of your motor or your motor may have a dead spot on the windings.. Here is a link to a website for parts that coincide with this drawing.. There isn't an awful lot to a compactor in terms of hardware so good luck.. Hope this helps..

Trash Compactor Problem

Had a similar problem with mine. I took it apart and found that the nut that is on the bottom end of the ram screw was loose. I tightened it and it fixed the problem. That was about a month ago. Now it is doing it again. I'm going to tighten it again this weekend and apply Loc-tite to the threads.

To get to the nut, you have to lay the compactor on its side and remove the plate from the bottom. You'll see a chain that goes around the motor sprocket and both ram screws. You need to tighten the nuts on the ram screws.

Hope this helps.
