Why does it take two bowls of water before water gets hot

How quickly the water coming out of any specific faucet "gets hot" is most often a function of the distance from the water heater. A faucet that is a significant distance from the water heater must first allow all the cool/cold water in the lines to flow through before the hot water will begin to flow from the faucet. You can estimate that distance. look here:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/How-far-hot-water-travels-in-household-pipes-in-30-seconds.pdf

The wait can be solved to some degree with a continuous flow pump, but this uses (wastes) lots of energy. Installation of a tankless heater in close proximity to the faucet can also solve the "problem". Be sure its is capable of raising the water temp at the flow rate as you require.

You could start by seeing if the thermostat is wide open. Sounds like it is on low or vacay mode. How far is the run between your heater and the bathing area. Might need to insualet some piping.

Just bought a new home and have a reliance heater. Some times the water is luke warm and some time it is like a boiler pipe. what should I look for or test

sounds like you have the heater set on its highest setting and its tripping the thermal protector. If that trips the water inside has to cool way down before it resets itself. Try setting the temp lower.
One more thing this time of year the water comming into the home is a lot colder this time of year and that makes the heater work harder and takes longer to heat the water. 40 degree water takes longer to heat than 65 degree water in the summer. This also means that it dont take much water cool the water in the water heater faster to luke warn.
If this is new home with a new water hater you might think about going tankless, then you have endless hot water and save money at the same time.

1) What you describe does not sound like normal.

4) Tankless installation and repair is a developing and complicated field as tankless numbers increase and companies hone their products, and customer relations, and installers get trained and certified.

5) I suggest you read your manual over and over to discover necessary maintenance and possible tricks and tips needed to keep these high-tech units working.

6) As a general rule, Rheem will refer you back to installer.
You might want a second professional technician to look over the problem to double-check first guy's work.

I just had a noritz tankless hot water heater converted from LP gas to natural gas, and had the hot water heater moved outside my garage. Before the gas change over and the move, I could turn on my garage...

One thing that comes to mind right off is did they use proper size orifices when they converted? L.P. uses a much smaller size then natural gas because it runs at a much higher pressure. Just a thought but I had a water heater from the factory for a mobile home that had the nat. gas sticker on gas valve and I hooked it up in town to nat. gas supply. Unfortunately it had L.P. orifices and I was in a hurry to get to another job ,lit it turned burner on and left. Two hours later my customer called to say they didn't have enough hot water. Didn't take long to discover what the problem was and correct it. Thank god for good customers. Hope this helps you. Thanks

I have a 40 gal Whirlpool single element 3500 mobile home hot water heater. I have replaced the element thermostat high pressure valve (because it was leaking) & flushed for sediment. In morning I wash...

A 40 gal. electric water heater will give you aprox. 32 gal. of hot water in one setting, since they do not reheat as quickly as gas. So if you are using a newer 1.5 or 2.0 gpm shower head. You could take a 16 minute shower with straight hot water. If you are running 2 new shower heads at once you could get 8 minutes. If you using the tub spout the times decrease. Some of my customers like to turn up the temerature on the thermostat a little so they can mix more cold and get it to last a little longer. Be very careful doing this.
If your water heater has a lot of calcium built up in it the times will decrease.
With out seeing the heater, you mention it is a mobile home heater so I am guessing that it is bottom fed.
I hope this has helped.

Is this water heat a older model or pretty new?I should have read more first.OK ,this is what I think you should do.I am hoping this is gas water heater and you said it sat for a long time. I think you should take the burner and clean it.But don't take the gas valve apart. Then read the direction on the heater to light it. You should fine a bleige incolor knob on top of the gas valve.Turn it to pilot and push down and hold it until you get the pilot lite, once you get it lite hold down for another minute to heat the thermocoupen. Once the thermocouplen red take your hand off it.Make sure the heater is full of water and the water will run out of the hot water lines. If you got all of that then turn knob on the gas valve to the on and stop.there the heater should start burning now.PS.Forgot to tell you to bleed the line first to get all the air out.You can smell the gas when it comes out because it smells like a bad egg. Thanks for picking FIXYA.COM
