SOURCE: central air conditioner doesn't cool

Usually when a unit isn't cooling it is because one there isn't enough freon in the unit. Second there could be a compressor gone bad. Third there could be a circuit short out. It can be very simple and it can be costly. It just needs to be checked out by someone who has understanding in this area.Look for an affordable service man or company in your area whom most people may be using to come out and check it out for you. They would be glad to. They can let you know about what it might cost also. If you have understanding in this area you might do it yourself. I do most everything myself and it keeps alot of money in my wallet. But I have to take the time to do it.

SOURCE: central air conditioner doesn't cool

The capacitor is located inside the control panel on the outside unit. It is round or oval and silver in color. It runs the outdoor fan and the compressor both.
The terminals are marked= C, /F or fan/, H or herm. C-F-H.
The microfarad rating is printed on the capacitor. Make a color code wire diagram before removeing wires.
Disconnect power to the unit. Use a insulated screwdriver to short out the terminals on the capacitor before removing it.

Replacing a Coleman with a Duotherm, can the same thermostat and controls be used?

Hi, yes you can use the same thermostat if you are replacing the unit that has the same sequence of operation. What I mean is, if the old unit is a gas fired furnace and outdoor condenser split system for the a/c you can use the same controls, or if its a package unit. Now, if you are installing a heat-pump unit in place of a gas fired central unit, you will need to pull more stat wire and buy a heat-pump thermostat to make it run.

When we turn on the central air there is a strong burning smell...like burnt toast but way stronger. IS it safe to remian in the house?

Is your central air furnace or electric heat. Electric furnace sometimes have electric strip sequencer stick in the closed positions leaving on one strip of the electric heat. Get a service tech as soon as possible to check this out. Any smells from a central unit need to be teken care of promptly. TURN OFF unit you have it checked for your safety. Rus

I have an old 1985-86 coleman central heat and air need manual

The filter is located before the blower if your Coleman is in a mobile home it will be in the door facing. If it is a standard ac/heat application and a regular residential furnace the blower in the cabinet on down flow (ducts in floor) will be above it and possible in the duct connecting in the top. If its the other way (ducts in ceiling) it could be right under the blower. Either of these could have a filter cabinet on the furnace or could have a filter grille at the end of the return air duct (where the air is sucked in).
