SOURCE: I get loops on top and/or bottom of fabric during

Top tension back to 4 and leave the bobbin tension as is.

Make sure you have a new needle for the type of fabric being sewn installed with the flat side to the back of the machine. A bent needle can sometimes go unnoticed.

Always thread the machine with the presser foot up and this will give proper tension to the stitch.

Check the manual to be sure you are threading correctly (always with the presser foot up) and that the bobbin thread is feeding in the correct direction from the bobbin spool and through the guides.

Take hold of the thread at the needle as you lower and raise the needle to pull up the bobbin thread. Take both thread ends under the presser foot and to the back of the machine.

Why is my Brother SQ9185 Sewing Machine thread bunching up on the back side of the fabric?

That is called thread nesting or bird nesting. Usually it is because it is threaded incorrectly (sometimes the thread jumps out of a thread guide or the take-up lever), the upper thread is not seated in the tension disk, or the upper tension is incorrect.

First thing, install a brand new needle.
Second, remove the upper thread, RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning--make sure the correct thread path is followed.
Third, check that the upper tension is set at the midway point between high & low number.

Test. Adjust the upper tension as needed. Re-test. Tension is correct when the upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

Tension is loose underside

Loops appear on the surface (top side) of the fabric?
Reduce the tension by turning the upper tension control dial to a lower number. If the loops still appear on the surface of the fabric after you adjust the upper tension, the bobbin thread may be too loose. In this case, turn the screw clockwise, being careful not to over-tighten the screw, approximately 30-45 degrees to increase bobbin tension. After you adjust the bobbin thread, adjust the upper thread to match the bobbin thread.
Make sure you reset before your next project.

The thread is bunching underneath the material and the stitching is very loose

Usually that is due to insufficient upper tension OR a thread routing problem. Make sure when the presser is lowered that the upper tension activates. I think if one had really thick material the tension MIGHT not activate because the lever would not come down far enough.

Check that the needle is in right... usually the long groove is closest to the operator.

I have a brother SE 270-d. my only problem is that while embroidering, the bobbin thread is showing through the design on the top. I have tried adjusting the top thread tension but no matter how I adjust...

Try making the material tighter in the hoop and check your bobbin to be sure it's a L (look at your instruction manual...it will show you which bobbin works and which does not. I say this because you have a tension problem...dont we all, Ha Ha!

Bobbin thread pulls to the top with all but Brother brand

Your machine was designed to work with the Brother brand of bobbin thread. Any other thread will cause tension issues. If you want you machine to work with another brand of bobbin thread I suggest purchasing an additional bobbin case and have it calibrated for use with the other brand of thread.

Brother SE-270D - need timing instructions

If your machine bunch up the tread, it has nothing to do with timing. In 90% of the cases the problem lies with the top thread. Check your tension disks for any fluff or thread. Also check that you thread the machine correctly. The best way to check the tension is to thread the machine normally with the presser foot up. when you get to the stage of the threading the needle, first lower the presser the presser foot and check the tension by pulling the thread slowly with your right hand and adjust the tension with your left hand. On zero you should be able to pull freely and on 5 there should be enough resistance. If this is the case your machine should sew perfectly.
Hope this help
