Most times this is because the computers have differing sub-net masks and/or IP addresses have differing roots. A simple solution is to set all computers to use DHCP to get their network addresses.

If you post the IP addesses and sub network fields for each machine I can be more precise.

<When we hook up the dsl and 2 pcs to the hub we keep getting the conflict message. ...another computer on this network has the same ip address

One of the PCs might have a static IP address. Go into the TCP/IP properties for both PCs and make sure they are set to dynamically obtain IP addresses. Then reboot the PCs and the hub, and you should be okay.

Are there any other devices on your network? They might be the ones with the conflicting IP addresses. Any iPods, TVs, or Wii's?

3com 8 port hub not connecting to 2nd pc

Be sure that when you say its a hub that is indeed a layer 1 device which is just passing the signal and data along to all ports. Be sure to check the cable on the second device. At this point it must a straight cable you use to connect the PCs to the Hub. PCs transmit on pins 1 & 2 and Receive on 3 & 6. Hubs are the opposite. So a crossover will not work. You need PC pin 1 & 2 Tx to Hub Pin 1 & 2 Rx and over to PC pin 3 & 6 Rx to Hub pin 3 and 6 Tx. Tx = transmit and Rx = Receive. Also assign an IP address on each machine that is in the same subnet as each other. Such as PC1 192.168.1.100 mask 255.255.255.0 and PC2 IP address as 192.168.1.101 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 This way the 192.168.1 is the same for 8 PCs and the only change is the last number (octet). Also keep the speeds at either 10/100/1000 what ever the product is rated for but always keep the duplex half. Half is good because on a layer 1 hub, everyone is broadcasting at the same time. So you have to have half of all the ports listening at all times.

I hope this helps. My advice is to buy a layer 2 switch.

Networking 2 computers

Yes you can make a simple Network between 2 PCs ....but ....you need what is called a "crossover ethernet cable" or "xover". A standard RJ45 ethernet cable WILL NOT work.

You also need to make sure both Pcs are in the same Workgroup and have unique computer names.... as is standard in Networking.

Only showing as a network device on 2 of the 3 pcs on the network

Did u added the new network devices, or did u wait till thy popped up?
If u didn't added them manually, then go to networklocations, add network location, press next, and again next, then type in \\mybookworld\"here the name of the folder of your mybook, ex. Movies or music,.." (without " ")

Do it for every folder.

You must configure the other PCs in the same IP range of the netgear. fexample: if the netgear ip adress is 10.0.0.1 then the other PC should have an IP like 10.0.0.x (x = any number from 2 to 254)
