You need to download all the drivers installer files from manufacturer website first, and also all the software you want to install automatically with Windows. Then you build a Windows Xp boot CD with all the software setup embedded.

You can try also to do reformat your hard drive as fresh unallocated one before doing formatting again to install windows. And check your installation disk for scratches.

SOURCE: How to make bootable disk with win xp.iso format?

to answer the first question an Iso file can be burned to disk using the iso
burning function that comes with most burning software. if this file is an operating system then it would automatically be burned as a boot disk and nothing else would be needed. However if this is say service pack 3 and its an iso format then even though your burning it using an iso function it would just be service pack 3 and nothing else a none boo table disk.

XP repair
When you boot with the Win XP install CD-ROM, it loads a minimal operating system, similar to DOS, but compatible with Win XP. At the first screen you select install Win XP (not Recovery Console) and at the next screen it will find that you already have Win XP and offer to attempt a repair. This repair should not touch your Applications or data; it just reinstalls the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software.

You can try this first before the XP repair :
Chkdsk
Take the Windows XP disk. Boot from it, then DO NOT select F2 (automated system recovery) but continue through the procedure until you get to the point where you can choose between installing Windows XP and entering the Recovery Console. Once you get into the Recovery Console, do chkdsk and fix potential errors on your disks! Chkdsk C: /R

Computer will start and run windows but will not open desktop. When I try to open in safe mode, I just get a blank screen I can't do anything with

The following is based on an article by Billy O'Neal at http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com,

How to use the Recovery Console to make repairs to Windows XP

First, if you don't have a Windows XP Home, Pro or MCE installation CD, don't despair.

Download the following and create a bootable CD from the .iso file: XP Recovery Console

Note that you don't burn the iso file itself to CD, you create a CD from the iso file using your CD burning software.
If you don't have any CD burning software installed or if you're unsure, you can follow the tutorial here:
How to Burn an ISO File

You can delete the RC.ISO file once you've burned it to CD or DVD.

Steps to perform on the problem machine:
  1. Place your Windows XP Installation CD or the new Recovery Console disk you just created into your CD or DVD ROM drive, and reboot.
    You should see this:
    pressanykey.png
If you don't see the above, try pressing the F10 or F12 keys during boot and selecting the CDRom device from the list.
If that doesn't work, enter BIOS Setup by pressing the F1, F2, F10 or Del key during boot and modifying the
Boot Order or Boot Priority to make the CD/DVD first boot device.

If your machine won't boot to the CD, make a post in the Microsoft Windows™ forum asking for assistance with this task.
Please include the exact make and model of your computer so we can provide more exact instructions.
  2. Press any key to start Windows Setup (Don't worry.. we're not actually using setup at this point)
  3. Wait a while for setup to start, until you see the following screen, then press the R key.
    img-resized.png Reduced: 71% of original size [ 720 x 396 ] - Click to view full imagercr.png
  4. Wait until you see this screen, and enter the number of your main installation. (Typically 1 for C:\Windows)
    img-resized.png Reduced: 79% of original size [ 645 x 151 ] - Click to view full imagercselectwindowsinstall.png
  5. Press Enter.
  6. If prompted to do so, enter your Administrator password. If you don't have one, leave it blank and press enter.
  7. From the command prompt, enter: chkdsk /r (note the space between chkdsk and /r)
    Allow it to complete undisturbed.
  8. Remove the CD/DVD then reboot. Windows should now begin loading.
For more information on the Recovery Console, read this Microsoft article: How to install and use the Recovery Console

Also, if your computer has a floppy drive, you can download the Windows XP Setup boot disks from Microsoft and boot them to start the Recovery Console.

My sony laptop with windows xp home media center keeps rebooting

When XP gets into the rebooting mode, you will have to run a chkdsk or do an XP repair. You will not lose your data. But you do need your recovery cd or a WinXP cd.

Type chkdsk C: /R at the prompt in the recovery console.

This repair should not touch your Applications or data; it just reinstalls the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software.
Lastly, your drive can be taken out of the unit and set into an enclosure or adapter. The data can be saved, the your hard drive can be formatted and programs and data reinstalled.

Boot into the recovery console and run; chkdsk /r Note the space between dsk and /r. If you are unsure of how to get into the recovery console, and have access to a Windows CD; 1. Boot the computer with the Windows CD 2. Select the option to enter the recovery console 3. At the prompt, type CHKDSK /R and press enter (this may take a while). If you do not have access to a Windows CD, but DO have access to a working system with a CD-R or CD/RW, download the XP Recovery Console CD ISO* and burn it to CD using DeepBurner (or whichever application you have that supports such (DeepBurner, Nero, MagicISO etc)). http://archives.mysteryfcm.co.uk/?f=System/Diagnostics/XP_Recovery_Console_CD_ISO * This CD ISO will load pretty much the same as the XP installation program but will NOT provide installation options, ONLY the recovery console. This can be used regardless of whether you are using 2000, XP, 2003 or Vista. Once you have the ISO burnt, boot the computer using the CD and go to the recovery console. Once at the recovery console, type the following and press enter; CHKDSK /R
