There is a plastic arm that rests on your paper. As the paper supply decreases, this arm drops lower and lower. When you are out of paper, the other end of the arm trips a photo sensor that tells the printer "you are out of paper." The sensor is either jammed or broken. Pull the tray out and examine the printer for the paper sensor.

SOURCE: 2 small springs broke off on bar above paper tray

mate, printers are cheaper than ink cartridges nowadays.

i wouldn't bother repairing it,

Use it as a backup scanner and fax maybe, buy yourself another for a few bucks,

it's the dell inks that cost a fortune, so try buying another series 5 and use your inks

SOURCE: printer has two smudges in same place every time

The reason you see a smudge in the exact same place everytime is due to ink being on the roller. Solution: using good light, use isoprel alchol on a cotton swab to clean the roller. Ink on the roller is also an indication that your head cleaner pad (look really good on the right hand side <inside> for the pad) is dirty. If you've not done so in the past, just flip it over and like magic you have a clean pad...just dirty on the other side.

Printer does not pick up paper to print.

The rollers may be dirty and slipping. I just fixed this problem on my old HP 820Cse by cleaning the three rollers with rubbing alcohol (99% isopropyl alcohol) as follows:
1) Remove the paper tray. The release lever is under the tray.
2) Saturate a small 4-layer pad of paper towel with the alcohol.
3) Try to print something. The rollers will turn. While they turn, hold the alcohol-soaked pad firmly against one roller.
4) Repeat 5-10 times for each roller until no more black stuff comes off. (Push the button next to the printer's amber light to repeat the print cycle.)
5) Slide the tray back in. You're good to go!

Brother MFC 8220 has a red ligth with an error message saying check paper reload paper. I put the tray correctly with papers loaded and it keeps. Cannot print, copy or fax anything

mine was doing the same thing. pull the paper tray out and there is a black lever next to the feed drum, it wouldn't move up and down. I took of the cover and slid the lever over to the left so it would move freely and now it is fine.

I have filled the paper tray with paper and will not print

Try to flip down the back cover and lower the flap that covers the rollers. On the inside of that flap, right in the middle of it, you will see a small, one inch long lever that helps keep the paper up against the roller. This lever was moved to the left a bit to far, so I nudged it to the right. As soon as you do this, the light should stop blinking and the printer should work.

Cannon imageclass mf3240 laser printer paper jam

Hello there,

Hope I could still share with you this fix because this is where you need to look at when you think you have done everything to remove the paper jam.

1. Turn off the printer and pull out all plugs and power cord that is attached to your printer.

2. Remove the paper tray at the bottom and let the printer lie at its back so that you can see underneath.

3. Get a flashlight and look closely for the sensor located underneath the printer. The sensor is located in a small square hole, just above the small black plastic "lever" (looks like a small hockey paddle) on the left side of the gray rubber roller. Move the lever so that you can freely look closer on the hole.

4. Notice because there could be a tiny paper shred stuck inside and this causes the sensor to detect a paper jam.

5. Get a small tweezer to remove that paper out.

6. Next, let the printer stand normally and return the tray back.

7. Re-plug all cables and start your printer. That's it!

Paper tray is full and the paper light keeps flashing.

First check the machine for paper jams. If not, remove the paper from the paper tray and reinstall it. Then try to print from the MP tray.If this works, check paper size settings on the printer driver, or the small black arm which hangs down next to the paper pick up roller, and is the paper sensor.

Brother printer problem

Manual Feed Command.
1. Press the Job Cancel button to cancel the print job. Delete the print
job in the print queue on the computer. You can quickly access the print queue by double clicking the Printer icon in the task
tray or dock.

2. Turn the printer power switch OFF on the right side of the printer.
Check that the front cover is closed.

3. Turn the printer power switch ON while holding down the GO button
until the Toner, Drum, and Paper LEDs are lit.

4. Release the GO button. All LEDs will be off.

5. Press the GO button 8 times. The green Status LED will flash briefly
while the printer is reset. After the printer is reset the Status LED
will be lit green.

6. Print the Print Settings by pressing the GO button three times. If
the Print Settings pages do not print and the Paper LED is on again skip
to the next section - No Paper in the Paper Cassette.

If the Print Settings pages print, the problem is isolated to printing
from your computer. The Paper Source of the Brother printer driver or
program you are printing from may be set to MP Tray or Manual, instead
of Auto Select, Tray 1, or Tray 2 (if the optional paper tray is
installed). To check the Paper Source setting of most programs, click
File and Page Setup or Page Layout. You may need to click the Paper
Source tab or Paper tab depending on your software application. Verify
that in the Paper Source section does not list MP Tray or Manual. Choose
Auto Select, or another relevant source such as Tray 1. Click OK. Try printing the document again.

No paper in the paper cassette.
1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the printer.

2. Insert the letter or legal size paper into the paper tray with the
top edge of the paper first and the print side down. Make sure that the
paper is flat in the tray and below the maximum paper mark. If using a
paper size other than letter or legal, the paper should be loaded in the
MP Tray. The MP Tray can print on paper from 2.75 in. by 4.57 in. up to8.5 in. by 16 in.

3. While pressing the blue paper-guide release lever, slide the paper
guides to fit the paper size. Make sure that the guides are firmly in
the slots. For legal size paper, press the lever located at the back of
the tray and pull out of the back of the open tray.

4. ReinstalI the paper cassette back into the printer. Press the GO
button. If the alarm clears, no further troubleshooting is needed. If
the alarm continues, follow the steps below.

Paper Jam at Paper Pick-up.
1. Turn the printer power switch OFF on the right side of the printer.

2. Remove the paper cassette from the printer.

3. Elevate the front of the printer slightly to locate the jammed
paper.

4. Gently remove the jammed paper.

5. ReinstalI the paper cassette back into the printer.

6. Turn the printer power switch ON. If the alarm clears, no further
troubleshooting is needed.

Don't be mad, but it never hurts to ask if you've checked the following...
  • Made sure that the printer has not been set to use legal or A4 paper in tray 1. You can set this through the options listed in the menu map on the printer display.
  • Have you checked that the Word document is not setup in the "normal.dot" or in the document itself to use A4 or legal as the default paper type.
  • Is the small paper resize lever in tray 1 pushed flush against the 8.5x11 paper in the feeder so that it detects properly.
Less obvious...
  • Did you make sure that the print properties are not setup with the wrong tray configuration...i.e. listing a duplexer when one is not present, additional trays, or a feeder?
If the answer is that you have done all of this and the issue has not been resolved, I would try looking for obstruction above the primary feeder tray, in the gear assemblies in and around the bottom of the printer and the tray, or around the paper sensor. (a small plastic lever in the front of the tray.

Possibly a defective paper sensor (small lever in the tray contacts
paper) Try removing, and inserting paper a few times if this clears it
then it was sticking. If that dosen't work then you will have to
disassemble it and inspect the area of the tray switch to determine
it it needs replacement

Paper light on...!!

Turn the printer off. Take out the toner drum and cartridge. Remove the toner cartridge by pressing on the blue lever on the left side. Check for paper. Replace the cartridge. At the rear of the toner drum is a blue slide lever on the right side for cleaning the corona wire. Move the lever back and forth, left and right, about 30 times. Reset lever to far right side with arrows lining up. Set the drum and cartridge aside. Remove the paper tray and look inside for a jammed sheet of paper. Flip the back lid down and check for paper. Snap the back lid up, replace the paper tray, and replace the drum and toner cartridge. Turn the printer on. Press the ready button 3 times quickly. It should print a specifications sheet. If it does, try printing from your computer. If this did not help, Brother tech support is 1-800-276-7746. Robi
