Replaced a garage door opener (motor only) will only go downward a foot then back to the up position...tried the force button and the spring adjustment. why wont it work

Try this.

Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor unit. With the door closed run the motor until the sprocket turns clockwise and stops. With everything attached replace and tighten the chain. Some adjusting of the up and down limits will probably be required.

Last night, I went to close my garage door and as it started to close (door moved about a foot), it reversed directions and opened. I suspected a cat might have ran in and tripped the safety sensor, but,...

On the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go you will find a small light. Check to see if it is flashing a code. It will flash a number of times then pause and then repeat. This will help diagnose the problem. Also make sure the trolley hasn't traveled too far and jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. Post back.

When the door is open and you go to close it , it travels about a foot then reverses and motor unit flashes. what could be wrong, I checked the sensors and they are showing green.

Any time the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position it is a door sensor problem. Check them closely. If one of them is flickering ever so slightly it will cause this problem. Also make sure they are fastened securely so that they are not moving when the door closes.

Check your door springs to make sure one hasn't broken. Then remove the cover off the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. It will be obvious if it is going bad.

Garage door opener closes when closed

Try this: Loosen the chain enough that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor. Now run the opener until the sprocket turns in the clockwise direction and stops. Reconnect the chain. This will get everything in sync and you will have to tweak the 'up and down limits' a bit to get it just right.

Newer openers have always been designed to reverse to the open position when a button is pressed during closing. This is a safety feature. To do what you want you must press the button while the door is opening. That will stop it where you want.

Garage Door won't close!

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a problem with the door sensors. Make sure the small light on each sensor is lit and not blinking ever so slightly. If it doesn't flash it is most likely the RPM sensor which is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor. There is also a possibility that the down force needs to be increased. This is a control on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go. Increase it about a quarter turn.

Door reverses about 1 foot from floor.

You can overridride by pushing and hold wall button. If the door goes down and reverses up about a foot from the floor it could be a force setting issue on the opener or an issue with the door. First, pull the handle on the opener and operate the door manually a few times to make sure it opens and closes freely. You should be able to open and close the door with one hand or there is a problem with the door. If you determine that the door is ok then look at the force setting knobs. They are located on the back and have numbers from 1-10. These should be set on about 4-5 for the upforce and the downforce. I hope this helps.
