Craftsman 1/2 hp chain drive starts to close approx 12" then returns to open. replaced main gears 2 weeks ago everything was working. now its about 6" from full open and will only travel 12" then returns...

Make sure you put the black cup back onthe end of the motor shaft and that it is pressed all the way on.Make sure the RPM sensor is plugged in. If neither of these are theissue, then you probably did not have the motor shaft pushed all theway back when you tightened the coupler after replacing the wormgear. Loosen that coupler up and from the front of the motor(opposite end in which the coupler is on) push the shaft back as faras it will go. Hold it there while you tighten the coupler back upand then try it.

Garage door closes and then opens immediately.

On the back of the motor unit you will find a control 'down force'. Turn this about 1/4 turn and try. This is for the reversing after moving a foot or so. Do not increase this control too much as it affects the safety.

If the door is hitting the floor and then reversing you will need to adjust the 'down limit' which is on the side of the motor unit. It takes a small screwdriver and you need to turn this control in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking will be necessary and remember if you run the motor too much a thermal switch will shut it off and you will have to wait 15 to 30 minutes for it to cool. This is normal so you will not be hurting anything.

I just installed a sears craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener. when i close the garage door with the remote the chain track bends up just about 12 inches before it closes all the way, and this only happens...

What is wrong is you need to adjust the limit on the door when it comes up. What it is doing is coming to far back on the track. You need to push the back limit forward away from the motor so the door does not come back and drop down on the inside of the garage. The opener is trying to push the door up hill to get it to close that is why you are getting the bend in the track.

Good Luck

Garage door opener closes when closed

Try this: Loosen the chain enough that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor. Now run the opener until the sprocket turns in the clockwise direction and stops. Reconnect the chain. This will get everything in sync and you will have to tweak the 'up and down limits' a bit to get it just right.

Have to hold the push button inside my garage to close garage.

You have a door sensor problem. Make sure the sensors are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not blinking. Also check the wiring.

Garage door won't close

Check if there is a shadow being cast onto one of the sensors as the door closes. We've had the rope for manually closing the door cast a shadow in full sun and trigger the "something crossed the beam" safety reverse. (Our temporary solution was to cast a shadow that remained constant from outside the door.)

Similarly check if there are any weeds or grass that are being blown or bent into the opening as the door closes. If there are plants in or near the doorway, trim them or use an herbicide to kill them and then trim the top growth after the plant dies.

Garage door opened, won't close

If you can press and hold the wall button and the door will go down, you have a photo eye issue. Check the photo eyes at the bottom of the door.
