I had a stove in my camper that did this. The answer was to let the flame burn for a few minutes BEFORE closing the door. I think the original problem is that there is too much gas flowing to the burner and it literally blows itself out, until you get everything heated up and working. The question, I think, is there a way to turn down the gas pressure??

SOURCE: Gas Oven

Boy, thats GE for you. God, I run into this all the time with GE products, you cant find the parts half time, and when you do, their more expensive than buying a new stove. Do you still have the model number or part number? If not, a lot of the new ignitors will work as well. Part numbers WB2X9154, WB13K21, WB2X10016, and WB2X9998 will a lot of times mount right back up to an older number ignitor set-up and can be found pretty easily on Ebay so you wont have to pay that "Generally Expensive (GE)" price. Let me know if you might need any other assistance or info, and good luck.

SOURCE: Stoves Newhome SI550DOm gas cooker

Hi,
This is a common safety feature, and is based upon the main gas valve inside the appliance. It regulates only a tiny ammount of gas through when closed - enough to light a pilot. This should then heat a component high enough to trigger the main gas valve and light the main burner.

With the door fully open. Turn on the oven and watch the pilot ignite FROM THE OUTSIDE. Look to see that it is heating what looks like a small wire in the flame. If it is not. Turn it off and let it cool.

You need to adjust this into the path of the flame just by bending it a little. Then try again.
If you cannot, or adjustment doesn't work, then you really need a replacement main gas valve - which is a registered appliance specialist job I'm afraid. Don't take chances with gas appliances.

Thank you for using Fixya.

Why won't the burners light even when I smell gas and hear igniter clicking?

Bill, two things possibly going on here that are common with an aging grill. First you need to turn off the fuel tank and set it aside. you mention that a clicking can be heard when pushing the igniter button which usually indicates good battery but if you have never changed it you may want to just as a good measure. Unscrew the bottom and you should find AA or AAA battery behind it. Now with battery good and the igniter generating a fast load clicking sound you want to get down and follow the wire that runs from the the back side of the igniter push button down inside and usually under the burner tubes ending out at one end of each burner. What happens when you press the igniter switch is, an electrical current is sent down the wire and when it reaches the end the current jumps to the closest metal it can find creating a spark.so you need to insure that the end of the wire is close to where the flame is generated but not so close that that you cant see a spark. Make sure the end of the wire is bare and clean as is the area on the burner where it arcs Now do this to all for burners. Turn all the knobs on the grill off and connect the tank. Make sure the lid is open now, and slowly open the valve on the tank. I say slowly like a ten count from close to full open. what can happen if you crank the tank valve open too quickly or with the grills valves open a vapor-lock effect can be created greatly reducing the flow of fuel from the tank. Iv'e seen many of the uninformed return 1/2 full tanks due to this problem. If you notice week flame or no flame but smell gas ALWAYS SHUT OFF VALVE ON TANK IMMEDIATELY KEEP LID OPEN AND LET THE AREA VENT BEFORE TRYING AGAIN lest you be the one being barbecued. Good Luck

Troubleshooting nexgrill charcoal gas grill

did you replace the battery in the igniter?
less than 100 degrees indicates a safety has engaged, close gas valve, open burner valves.....wait 5 minutes. keep lid open, close burner valves, open gas valve until you hear the regulator click
turn on "ignition burner" and ignite (with switch or at specified port).
After this part is lit open other burners one at a time , waiting until each lights before opening the next.

Grill flames go out when lid is closed

I've been selling & servicing gas grills for years and I have to say, this is a first for me.
I can tell you this, your grill was made by either NEX Grill or Maytag. You will only find this grill at Lowe's.

The only possible thing I can think of that "may" be causing the problem is that the burner flames are not reaching the proper height and when you close the lid, it snuffs them out.

If you have a propane grill, try turning the tank off. Disconnect the hose from the tank and wait 5 minutes before reattaching it. Once you have firmly reattached it, turn the tank valve on very very slowly and until it's full open, Then light the grill burners one at a time and be sure they are on high. Close the lid and see what happens. If that solved your problem, the gas grill regulator was locked up and only allowed a small amount of gas to get through. If you turn your tank off after each use, be sure to turn it on very very slowly. Do this when you change tanks, too.

If you have a natural has grill, you may have a problem with the gas pressure to the grill. In which case, you will need to have the natural gas provider test the meter on your house.

Very low flame, like very little gas is getting thru, tank is ful

Okay, what you are dealing with is called "vapor-lock". The way these grills need to be turned off is, close the tank valve first and after the burners go out, then turn the burners off. The way you are doing it is trapping the gas and you are getting a weak flame. Fortunately this is an easy fix. First, light the grill by turning the gas valve open, then turn the burners on to light the grill...as soon as that is done, close the gas valve on the tank then turn the burners off. Repeat this procedure until you get a good flame. If this procedure hasn't fixed the problem after the third time, you need a new regulator and regulators are easy to find in any home improvement store like Lowe's or Home Depot.

Gas not getting to stove to ingnite

It sounds like you may be "vapor locking" the grill...after you are done cooking on the grill, how do you shut it off? Do you close the tank valve first then close the burner valves or do you turn off the burner valves then shut the gas off at the tank? If you turn the burners off before turning the gas off, you are creating a "vapor-lock" where air gets trapped in the line and you get the sputtering you are talking about.

Try this first, turn the gas on, then light the grill...once it is lit, turn off the gas and wait for the flame to fully extinguish then turn the burners off. Now try to light it again...if it is still sputtering, repeat the procedure above to purge the air out of the line.

If that procedure does not fix your issue after three tries, go get a new line and regulator and install then do that same procedure again. This should fix your issue once and for all.

If you experience any trouble with this, let me know here. Good Luck!

My grill does not exceed 300 degrees. The rear burner is barely lit, it sputters with a blue flame. The Front and middle burners run well, blue flame no yellow. I changed the regulator with one from home...

Bypass valve need reset. All grills made after 1996 have this valve.
  • Close the LP tank valve
  • Turn all burner control knobs to the OFF position
  • Open the grill lid
  • Turn the LP tank valve until it is completely open
  • Wait 90 seconds
  • Turn the front burner to the HI/Start position
  • Press the igniter until the burner is lit.
  • Turn remaining burners to High
  • Close the lid.
  • The grill should preheat to 500-550 degrees in 10-15 minutes
I called Weber and a rep walk me through it.

Since 1995 all regulators (the part that attaches to the gas tank to regulate the flow of gas) have included a safety device that restricts the flow of gas in the event of a gas leak. This safety device can be inadvertently activated in two ways, putting the grill into what is commonly called “bypass”. The first way for the device to be activated is to leave one or more burner control knobs in the “ON” position when the LP cylinder valve is opened. The second is not to wait long enough to “start” the grill after opening the LP cylinder valve. The safety device in the regulator is activated each time that the LP cylinder valve is opened. The device resets itself when the gas pressure equalizes between the closed burner control valve and the regulator, through the hose. If a burner control knob is turned on before the gas pressure can equalize, the device will remain in “bypass”. The length of time necessary to wait to “start” the grill after turning on the LP cylinder valve is dependent on the length of the hose and outside air temperature. It is always good practice to wait a few seconds after opening the LP cylinder valve before turning on the burner control knob to start the grill.
Keep in mind that the safety device reacts to a gas leak. If a grill is in bypass, the gas connections and hose should be tested for leaks with a soap and water solution.
If the grill is in bypass, after checking for gas leaks do the following to get the grill out of bypass:
To reset the gas safety device:
Open the barbecue lid.
1. Close the LP tank valve.
2. Turn your burner control knob to the OFF position.
3. Wait at least 5 minutes if the barbecue had been lit, then
4. Disconnect the hose from the LP tank.
5. Turn your burner control knob to the HIGH position.
6. Wait at least 2 minutes, and then turn the burner control knob to the OFF position.
7. Re-connect the hose to the LP tank.
Re-lighting the barbecue:
1. Open the barbecue lid.
2. SLOWLY open the LP tank valve all the way and wait 1 minute.
3. With the lid open, turn the burner control knob to the HIGH position.
4. Ignite the grill by pushing the crossover ignition button.
5. Close the barbecue lid.
6. The barbecue should reach 500 to 550 degrees in 10-15 minutes.
When you are done grilling:
1. Turn all burner control knobs to the OFF position
2. Turn off the LP tank valve last.
* Always follow the re-lighting instructions whenever you use the adapter hose and larger tank.
