System error 86:01

System Error 86:01, Noise Along the Carriage Path carriage moves or system error 86:01 is being displayed on the printer's front panel. General causes are media or other obstructions in the carriage path, the trailing cable, worn carriage bushings, lack of lubrication in the carriage path, a dirty encoder strip, the scan-axis motor, or the service station.

Troubleshooting this error is a bit complex, you have to check for paper jams and determine the source of the noise, if there is one.

Try checking this document for steps to determine the cause and solution to this issue.

HP 500ps showing error is System error 86:01

System Error: 86:01
Problem Description: Carriage-Axis shutdown.
If this error code appeared but was NOT caused by a paper jam, then try the following:
* Too much friction in the Slider Rod. lubricate the Slider Rod.
* The Carriage is bumping into the Service Station. If the carriage
is stuck at the right hand side of the Printer and cannot be moved
out to the center of the Print Platen it is because the Service
Station cannot uncap the Printheads. In this case replace the

My hp photosmart printer is saying Error carriage jam, open dorr clear carriage jam and then press Ok to continue. Which door should I open and how do I clear the carriage jam? Linda

Without any paper in the machine I would try powering off and powering on. Lifting the scanner lid will clear so the carrige goes back to the correct side of the printer. Even rebooting the printer and loading the software will sometimes cause the carriage to go back to where it was supposed to be.

ERROR 86:01

General causes are media or other obstructions in the carriage path, the trailing cable, worn carriage bushings, lack of lubrication in the carriage path, a dirty encoder strip, the scan-axis motor, or the service station. Follow the steps listed below to accurately troubleshoot the issue, and replace the appropriate parts.
1. Visually check for jammed media or other obstructions in the carriage path and remove any obstructions found (remove any loaded media as well).
2. Determine if the noise is normal. Some noise is normal. Specifically, it is normal to hear a slight clicking noise when the carriage moves under the left or the right-hand covers.
3. If an 86:01 error occurs during initialization and the carriage does not move out of the Service Station continue Step 4, otherwise go to Step 5.
4. Remove the right cover and check the cable connection between the Interconnect PCA and the Service Station motor. If connections appear normal, replace the Service Station
5. Attempt to verify functionality, if problems persist, continue with the remaining steps.
6. Unlock the carriage as instructed below:
a. Highlight the Set-Up menu and press the Enter key.
b. Press the Up Arrow and Enter keys simultaneously and then press Enter.
c. Scroll to Service Utilities and then press Enter.
d. Scroll to Unlock Carriage and press Enter.
e. Unplug the printer from the power source.
7. Move the carriage manually through the entire movement path to see if it encounters any obstructions or has more resistance in any particular spot. Remove any such obstructions if possible.
8. Clean and lubricate the carriage rail.
9. Slide the carriage manually back and forth several times to evenly spread the lubrication across the entire carriage rail.
10. Turn the printer on and attempt to verify functionality.

Epson R320 "General Error" message - unable to clear

If you are getting a 'carriage jam' error as soon as you turn on your Epson printer with no tasks in progress, then check for any piece of paper stuck in the carriage. Remove the paper carefully. If the paper tears, part of it might remain inside the paper path and damage the product.

Fix 'Carriage Jam' : Open Door, clear carriage jam,
and then press OK to continue' error message
Turn off the printer and open it to see where the paper is stuck.
Manually move the carriage toward the opposite side.
Check the paper path and remove any piece of paper or any other object that is stuck in the path.
Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

I keep getting a problem error 86:01

If you don't see a paper jam it's a carriage axis error. Try cleaning and then lubricating the bar well. Next look at the belt turn around on the non-motor end of the belt. You'll find a bearing in the spring loaded pully that wears out or ceases up. If the drag / friction is too high you will get the 86.01 error. I have included a link to a free copy of the HP Service Manual to help you get through it. The error is discussed on page 2-18 and 2-19.

Hope that helps you.
