Block the piston at bdc with a length of pullcord, then spin the nut on the flywheel, backin it off an 1/8 of a turn he. It bottoms out. Take the socket you used to loosen it, put it on the nut and give it a good whack. The flywheel should be loose.

Should the flywheel move counterclockwise without the engine???

Typically the flywheel is keyed to the crankshaft and cannot move without rotating the engine also. If the key is sheared then the flywheel can move without moving the crankshaft. To check this the flywheel needs to be removed and replace the key. Of course the reason for shearing of the key needs to be corrected before the problem is fixed.

Engine turns over but wont start

It sounds as though you may have a sheared flywheel key. The keys are made of aluminum and shear easily if the flywheel is not tight. Remove top cover and flywheel retaining bolt/nut. Examine key for location with slot in crankshaft. If sheared, orient the flywheel slot and crankshaft slot so that a new key fits. Be sure flywheel and crankshaft mounting surfaces are clean and free of oil/grease. Tighten crankshaft retaining bolt/nut to 90 ft lbs. Flywheel posisition is maintained by friction between it and crankshaft.

The timing on a lawnmower engine is controlled by the positioning of the flywheel on the crankshaft. There is a key (square metal pin) holding the flywheel at a predetermined location on the crankshaft. If the engine is out of time, the flywheel has slipped on the crankshaft (hitting a rock, brick or anything else solid with the blade will cause this.

The solution:

1. Disconnect the spark plug wire.
2. Remove the motor upper housing (usually a 3/8 or 7/16 bolt).
3. Remove the bolt at the center of the flywheel (use an impact wrench if you have one... or wedge a large screwdriver against one of the cooling fins and the magnet boss, not between two fins or you may break a fin.
4. Use a wheel puller to remove the flywheel.
5. Remove the square key that is between the flywheel and the crankshaft, (you'll notice that the key is damaged and will need to be replaced. Home Depot or Lowe's or any lawnmower repair shop should have a new key.
5. Install the new key in the slot on the crankshaft.
6. Reinstall the flywheel. (if the magnets are rusty, now would be a good time to gently sand the rust off of them, but do not mess with the magnetic pickup as the gap distance between the pickup and the flywheel is crucial)
7. Reinstall the top cowling.
Your mower should be ready.

The engine flywheel key is probably sheared, throwing the timing off and producing the soot. Remove the engine cover and starter cup on top of crankshaft. Look down the side of the shaft where the flywheel is held on. There is a long slot in the crankshaft there that runs vertically. Observe closely, and you will probably find that the slot in the flywheel has moved AWAY from the slot in the crankshaft. The key holds the two together, keeping the engine in time. The key is aluminum and a 1 dollar part. You will need to remove the flywheel to remove the old key, clean the slotted area up with emory cloth, and reinstall a NEW key. Timing will be restored and no more sooting!

Tecumseh OV691EA engine Carb spits, crankshaft stops when cylinders fire. Compression L-95 R-110

When you say crankshaft stops when cylinders fire I am assuming this is during start. This is caused by a flywheel key problem (Partially sheared) A flywheel key will partially shear if there was a sudden stoppage of the engine. I e. you hit something that stopped the blades right away.

I am pretty sure you have a flywheel key problem as this appears to be an engine timing problem and it is firing too soon. (again partially sheared flywheel key causes timing to advance. If there is not a problem with the flywheel key the next suspect would be the mechanical compression release.

A note about flyweel key replacement. Most of them are aluminum or soft metal so that the crankshaft does not shear off with a sudden engine stoppage. Just make sure to use a Tecumseh
replacement flywheel key and not one from an auto parts store.

My son hit a log with my js25 walk behind mower now it won't run.

He more than likely sheered the key in the crankshaft. When the key bends or breaks it throws the timing off and the engine will not start. The key is there to prevent damage to the crankshaft when you hit an object. You will need to remove the engine cover and then use a puller to remove the flywheel. Where the flywheel connects to the crankshaft you will see the key which is either broken or bent. All you do is buy a new one and replace it.

I hit a big cement block with my lawnmower and it wont start. How can i repair it?

When you hit a solid object with those fast moving mower blades, and you got lucky, it may have only sheared a key in the flywheel. The key is made of soft metal for just this it will fail before damage is done to the flywheel or crankshaft. Hitting a solid object can bend a crankshaft and cause major problems.
First, the blade and the crankshaft should rotate together. If you feel slippage, the key has broken and will require replacement.
You can possibly avoid removing the flywheel to inspect the key by removing the spark plug2.gif and rotating the crankshaft so the piston is at Top Dead Center and noticing the location of the magnet on the flywheel, relative to the position of the pole pieces on the magneto. The magnet should be very close to the magneto poles at TDC.
