Question about GE Profile WPRE6100G Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Load size dial on washer spins freely instead of moving to setting

When setting the load size dial (options range from small to super capacity, with reset option), dial now spins freely in both directions so that I am unable to select a setting. I usually hear a sort of fast clicking (for lack of a better word) noise as the knob turns), but now that noise is no longer there. This dial is supposed to turn without pulling the knob out or pushing it in. It seems as if there is no resistance, as if the "cogs" are no longer there to turn the wheel, although there was no indication that they might be wearing away, since the previous time I used the machine it worked fine. The machine is 7 years old, and is used approximately once a week, usually on the medium size, delicate, cold water setting. I think it is stuck on the small or smedium capacity setting.

That setting has to do with how much water is let into the drum. You can get a new switch for that. If you post the model number.

Testimonial: "I know what the setting does, that's why it's called the load size dial, which is what I stated in my question post! What I want/need to know is how can I fix it, if it is possible for me to do so."

Brad - Knowing where to get the part is not really going to help me much if I don't know which part I need to replace or how to get to it, or even what exactly the problem is. I really need to discover the problem and find out if this is something that I can fix myself before I order parts. Can you please explain what the problem is (if you do know), and how I go about fixing it, instead of just giving me a web address for a part. Thanks.

I was trying to keep it simple for you. You could call a repair person and pay several hundred dollars to have this done but seeing that you appear to want to repair it yourself, you need to unplug the washer and disconnect the water hoses. Pull it away from the wall, look at the back of the machine to see if there is a panel that comes off behind the controls. If the whole back is one piece, you may want to see if there are screws in the front, on the top, that hold the control housing to the main part, take the control housing that runs the whole length of the machine loose and you should be able to see the back of the control board. There are electrical connectors on it that you have to remove and also screws that hold it in. Take those out. You may want to use a camera to take pictures as you go so that you can tell where things are when you put it back. The part is WH12X10405 and it costs 100 - 150 USD.

SOURCE: GE top load Super Capacity 16 cycle washer (one year old)

We have a GE WJRR4170 washer, with the same problem. At first I thought I might have to unscrew the entire control panel just to replace the knob. However, replacing it turns out to be easy.

Right behind the knob, holding it in place, is a nylon/plastic retainer clip. If you pull out the knob (into the "start" position), you can use a flathead screwdriver to push the clip out. The knob then will slide easily off the metal stem. A GE replacement knob costs $9 or $10, depending on the source.

Shame on GE, but the knob is designed terribly. The part of it that engages the dial has eight, flimsy plastic teeth. At any time, four of these are supposed to engage four little slots in the dial. However, the way the knob is designed, there will be a lot of wear and tear on these plastic teeth, so they'll wear out on every single machine.

Good luck to the many people who will have this problem!

SOURCE: Broken knob on GE washer

There are four separate parts that make up the knob dial. You can pull off the knob if you use a screwdriver/pliers to remove the clip holding it on. Check if the mounting areas appear stripped or broken. There should also be a compression ring in the mounting hole on the back of the knob. That's what may be broken or stripped. These are all parts that you can get from a local parts store (check the phone book) and you can do it yourself. Any of those parts should cost less than $10. The bad news is if you stripped the pole coming out of the timer assembly. You would need to replace the entire assembly which costs about $130. If you call a GE repairman, you are looking at $89.95 or more just to have them show up. If it is still under warranty, there is no charge. You can call them to verify this:

SOURCE: The timer knob spins freely and I can't start the machine or set the timer.

"Can I replace it with a new knob or do I have to buy a new timer?"

It sounds like the knob is rounded out where it fits on the timer post, or It may just be loose. Pull the knob off and inspect it. If damaged, yes, you can buy another one.

Dial won't set

you can possibly remove the knob itself, and see if you can turn the dial itself. if you can, then you can probably see the knob is broken. if if the shaft turns, but doesn't move the gears, then you will just need a new dial switch.

Washers are more advanced and stylish than ever before. When you're buying a washer, look for features that make washing easier and more efficient, less costly, and kinder to fabrics. Thanks to advances in technology, it's all possible - and our washer buying guide shows you how.

Washer Types
Feature options, capacity, energy use and style are all factors to consider when deciding between a front- or top-loading washer.
oth top-loading and front-loading washing machines will do a good job of cleaning your clothes. The most significant differences between these types of washers are capacity, energy efficiency, water use, feature options, and style.

Top-loading machines

Traditional top-loading washing machines are available in a wide assortment of models, price ranges and styles. The most basic top-loading washers perform very well and are generally a good value for a no-frills, clean wash. Other top-loaders offer more cycle and temperature selections, spin speeds, and fabric care extras as they increase in price. Overall, top-loading washers are generally less expensive to purchase than front-loading machines, but are slightly more costly to run because they use more water and electricity.

Most top-loaders fill the tub with enough water to cover the clothing, then agitate them to get the clothing clean. Some manufacturers now offer high-efficiency top-loading washers using a number of different technologies. One such technology is the Whirlpool® Calypso® wash plate. Instead of agitating fabrics to get them clean, the wash plate moves them through a shower of concentrated detergent and water. The action is gentler on fabrics; it's designed to provide better cleaning with far less stress to garment fibers. And with the agitator out of the way, the washer has more room to clean bulky items such as comforters and rugs.

Standard capacity for a top-loading washing machine is 12 to 16 pounds per load. The Calypso wash plate model can hold up to 18 pounds of laundry (think the equivalent of 16 pairs of jeans).

WHAT IS THE LOAD CAPCITY SIZE OF WASHER MODEL 110.20702990

On newer, and sometimes a little newer, Whirlpool and Kenmore (Kenmore is made by Whirlpool) considers a few things in determing capacity. Most of the inner baskets are the same size, but they also add in agitator action into the mix. A Kenmore with an auger top agitator would have higher capacity than a Kenmore with just a normal agitator, even though it has the same sized drum. So a super capacity washer would have theoretically less CLEANING CAPACITY than a super capacity plus. The agitator action is actually what determines capacity on these models. So, with that in mind, cubic load should be about the same on both units. Sorry that I had to go into "Bill Nye The Washer Guy" mode, but thats about the only way to describe. Let me know if I can confuse you any more haha. Seriously though, if you need further help or info, write back, and will try to get you some other information. Remember, this theory only works on top load "normal people" washers, not the front loaders.
