Refrigerator temp My Kenmore top freezer is cold in the freezer compartment but not cooling well on the bottom. I have set the controls to C for the freezer and 7 for the fridge. Any suggestions? Also I now it has a freon leak. Is this worth fixing or should I replace the unit. It is 15 yrs old. Thanks

Re: Refrigerator temp

If it has a refrigerant leak, replace the fridge. Not many techs service r-12 refrigerant systems anymore because the cost is rediculous. The cooling problem could be associated with the leak or a defrost system failure or a fan motor failure. Almost anything that will cause this will require some parts to be replaced. I wouldn't recommend repair on a unit with gas leak.

Freezer is very cold refrigerator is not cold as it should be

Check your temperature control (Thermostat) settings. If it is not on high/max cool then set it just less than the maximum. If it still does not cool then I am afraid the problem is of less cooling gas. You have to ask a technician to check and refill.

if the freezer is getting cold the problem is due to the cold air from the freezer not getting into the refrigerator. There are several things that can cause this problem. The coils in the freezer icing up and not defrosting properly is one of the things that can cause the refrigerator not to get cold enough. Another problem is the fan that blows the cold air from the freezer compartment into the refrigerator, not working. When the compressor is running open the refrigerator's door and push the switch that makes the light go out. You should hear the fan blowing the cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator, when this switch is pushed in. If the fan is working then you will need to find what is blocking the air flow. Iced up coils are a common problem. The icing problem can be due to a defective defrost timer or something defective in the defrost circuit. Click here for more information. Check for these problems and let me know what you have found.
#1 Refrigerator side getting warm Freezer still cold
Evaporator fan motor not running.
Defective defrost timer. See Defrost Diagnosis Procedure
Defrost heater defective. See Defrost Diagnosis Procedure
Defrost thermostat defective. See Defrost Diagnosis Procedure
Airflow blocked from freezer compartment.
Freezer control turned to "coldest" setting blocking air flow to refrigerator side. On most refrigerator/freezers, the freezer control closes a baffle when turned to coldest setting, and this blocks off the air flow to the fresh food compartment.
Fan blade broken.
Defective door switch on older models.
Light staying on with door closed.
2 Refrigerator & freezer compartments both are getting warm
Make sure refrigerator is plugged in and has power.

Refrigerator not cooling

This could be that it is out of balance. Set the temperature settings to midway. This control can easily get the fridge temp out out of balance if over adjusted. If you already have the tmp control at midway then you need to make sure there are no obstructions to the duct that carries the cold air from the freezer to the fresh food section to cool it. Check for ice buildup or any kind of blockage. Let me know what you find.

Kenmore Elite bottom freezer refridgerator

I just went through this with my refridgerator and actually posted one of the questions. Here is what I found ........

In the freezer compartment behind the panel there is an evaporator fan which pulls cold air from the freezer and pushes it up into the refrridgerator compartment. If the fan is not working it is one of three things.. 1) there is so much frost in the fan area the fan blade is stopped and cannot push the cold air into the refridgerator compartment or the air channel is blocked. 2) there is no electricity going to the fan (usually tied to the door switch of the refirdgerator compartment, and 3) the motor is dead and will have to be replaced.

Solution to #1 - defrost but there is another problem in the "frost-free" part of the system which must be addressed or the frost will return and it will happen again in the future.

Solution #2 - check to see there is power to the fan. (most are 110VAC but some are 100VDC. Use a meter and check)

Solution #3 - If there is power, the motor is dead. Replace the motor. Be aware that AC and DC motors are different and replace per manufacture's specifications.
