Replacing the pinion gears in each wheel. Which way do the ratchet pawls go?


the pawls are positioned so that when the wheels rotate in a forward direction they lock up the pinion and drive the cutter blades ,
they release when the mower is pulled backwards
as for grease , if it had none then none is what is used
If it had grease then a water resistant bearing grease would be prefered

I have put in 2 starter gears in as many days on my 79 shovelhead can't figure out why it looks like gear is not going all the way on ring gear because teeth on starter gear are chipped in front edges how...


From Spyder's tech Tips, section entited: Wrenching Tips for Starter Pinion Gear

The starter pinion gear attaches to a splined endshaft on the starter gearbox assembly. The pinion gear is the gear that spins the ring gear attached to the clutch basket. Unless this gear is installed correctly the assembly can come apart and leave you with a pile of aluminum filings and a milled out extension shaft end support!
When installing the pinion gear on the splined endshaft you will install a splined washer, a spring, a flat washer, the pinion gear, a lockwasher, the extension shaft and the bolt that holds the whole thing together - in that order. The extension shaft is locked to the pinion gear by a lockwasher that fits between the gear and the extension shaft itself. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT THE BOLT IS TIGHTENED ENOUGH TO COMPRESS THE LOCKWASHER FULLY! If the bolt is not tight, the bolt will work loose and eventually cause the pinion gear to become detached from the endshaft spline.
It may be necessary to RED Locktite the screw that holds the endshaft to the starter jackshaft spline. You can use a propane torch (CAREFULLY!) to heat the bolt and break the Locktite bond if you wish to remove the bolt at a later date. Of course, WHENEVER YOU USE AN OPEN FLAME ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR BIKE YOU SHOULD DRAIN THE GAS TANK(S) into a legal and safe container.
The problem is that the endshaft turns in a clockwise direction as the starter is activated. Although the endshaft is held in a bushing, the resistance to turning will cause the endshaft to apply a force in the counterclockwise direction, tending to unscrew the bolt that holds the endshaft in place and compresses the lockwasher. It would be ideal if the endshaft bolt was left-hand threaded, but then it wouldn't mate with a stock starter gearbox endshaft spline.

How to open up a okuma komodo reel


to open the reel and access the worm gear cog ( the gear that actually drives the level wind ) you will need to remove the handle, the star drag assembly, the side plate screws etc. Before you do all of that look directly at the front of the reel beneath the level wind face plate is the worm gear pawl ( the tooth that actually rides in the level wind gear itself ) there is a cap with a flat head screw driver slot in it, remove the cap ( if you can access it with the face plate on other wise youll have to go thru the steps previously mentioned) and carefully tap the reel until the pawl itself falls out there will also be a very small washer that goes inside the cap. Inspect the pawl for defects like chips on the points that ride in the gear. also inspect the worm gear it self, debris that gets lodged in the gear from regular use can chip the ends off of the pawl which will cause the pawl to stick to one side or in extreme cases stop working all together. It is possible that the worm gear cog ( located in side the reel ) is damaged but almost every reel with this issue that I have repaired (100's of them) is caused by a damaged pawl or worm gear it self Dark Side Reelz

Guide does not move on GTO220 is pawl worn?


It should have a gear under the side cover that goes from the crank to line drum to the pawl. You should take the side cover off open face reel Periodicly to lube the gears. It may be so a locking pin in the interior gear.

Need to remove the ring gear assy to replace the pinion shaft bearing


The ring gear is bolted to what is called a ring gear carrier, the carrier is bolted inside the rear end housing with two bolts on each side, it is shimmed on each side to adjust backlash and pinion depth so DON'T mix up the left and right carrier shims, once the carrier is out with the ring gear attached you can remove the pinion shaft and drive out the bearing races of the pinion bearings. You also need to remove the pinion flange where the drive shaft U-Joint attaches, just hammer it off with a brass faced hammer (a steel hammer will run the flange) once the large center nut is removed.

Tming settings on gears how to put them together by the marks


First, make sure you've got the oil pump drive gear and the pinion on the pinion shaft of the crank and the nut properly torqued. Identify the cams. You should have a "1W", "2W", "3W" and a "4W". "1W" is the rear exhaust and "2W" is the rear intake. "3W" is front intake and "4W" is front exhaust. They go into the engine cases in order 1W in rear, next 2W over the pinion gear, 3W in front of the pinion gear, and 4W all the way to the front of the engine.

Install the "1W" cam. Then install the "3W" and the "4W" cam with the timing marks aligned. Now position the pinion gear with the timing mark straight up and lock the crank. Now, you must install the "2W" cam last making sure that the three timing marks are aligned with the pinion gear, the "1W" cam, and the "3W" cam.

The rear wheels will not turn in reverse at all. I


Rear wheel drives like this have pinion gears with rachet pawls that allow them to go backwards freely while locking when the transmission drives them.

You need to take off your rear wheels and carefully remove the pawls. They look like little squareish metal shaft keys with springs under them. You should notice that the keys or pawls are covered in what looks like grease.....which is actually worm metal from the pinion gear and oil mixed together to form this pastey greasey substance. Clean all that stuff off and lightly oil *( light oil...3 in 1 kind of oil) and reassemble.

You should hear the nice clean clicking of the rachet pawls as you roll backwards again!

PINION FLANGE & OIL SEAL

CAUTION: Following procedure must be used to retain proper pinion bearing preload. Failure to follow procedure may result in premature axle assembly or component failure. Ensure pinion bearing preload is checked before disassembly, as previous pinion bearing preload will be used during reassembly.

Removal

1. Raise and support vehicle. Scribe reference mark on drive shaft-to-pinion flange on differential for reassembly reference. Remove bolts and "U" joint straps at pinion flange on differential.
Disconnect drive shaft from differential.
2. Remove rear wheels and brake drums to prevent any drag that may affect pinion bearing preload reading. Using INCH-lb. torque wrench, measure amount of force required to rotate pinion. This is pinion bearing preload. Record pinion bearing preload for reassembly reference.
3. Using Holder (6719), hold pinion flange. Remove pinion nut and washer. Scribe reference mark on pinion flange-to-pinion for reassembly reference. Using appropriate puller, remove pinion flange from pinion. Remove oil seal from axle housing.

Installation

1. Ensure oil seal surface in axle housing is clean. Coat lip of oil seal with gear lube. Install oil seal using appropriate seal installer. Drive oil seal into axle housing until oil seal installer contacts axle housing.
2. Install pinion flange on pinion with reference mark aligned. Using appropriate pinion flange installer, install pinion flange on pinion.

CAUTION: Washer must be installed on pinion with convex side of washer facing outward (away from pinion).

3. Install washer on pinion with convex side of washer facing outward (away from pinion). Install NEW pinion nut. Tighten pinion nut to 210 ft. lbs. (285 N.m). Rotate pinion several times to seat pinion bearings.

CAUTION: DO NOT overtighten or loosen then retighten pinion nut when adjusting pinion bearing preload. If pinion nut is overtightened, collapsible spacer on pinion must be replaced.

4. Rotate pinion using INCH-lb. torque wrench. Rotating torque should be equal to reading recorded in removal step 2) , plus 5 INCH lbs. (.056 N.m). If rotating torque is low, tighten pinion nut in small increments until proper rotating torque is obtained.
5. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure using NEW "U" joint straps and bolts. Ensure all reference marks are aligned. Tighten bolts to specification. Check lubricant level and add if necessary.

Will not pull start


I had the same issue after a complete rebuild and replacement of numerous parts. One of the previous owners incorrectly wound the recoil pull starter rope in the wrong direction (when facing the internals - counterclockwise) and also put the pawl (metal thing that pops up and engages the shaft pulley wheel) in the incorrect slot (rightside hole). I read a blog of the same issue. I wrapped the cord in the correct direction i.e. clockwise and put the pawl in the correct slot i.e. the left side hole (the pawl was metal stamped with a big "L" by the way), installed the whole assembly back on my Tri-Moto 125 and it now starts on the first pull everytime; no more push starting! I hope this is the issue you are unfortunately facing and now it gets fixed...good luck.
