Question about Canon EOS 550D Rebel T2i Digital Camera
The Camera allows me to take a picture but when I click the view button the camera screen immediately goes black, the red light turns on and the only way i am able to power the camera down is by removing the battery (red light stays on even after switching to off). I assumed it had something to do w/ the memory card so I bought a new one, reformatted it and same problem. My firmware is up to date and I reset all the camera settings. Same problem. I've scoured the canon forums and have seen people describing the exact same problem but I was unable to find a solution. I really don't know what to do.
This is a common "glitch" of the motherboard on that model or series camera from Canon. either send it back for the motherboard replacement (not a repair, a replacement) if still under warranty or simply get the board on line and do it yourself, which if you ask me, it is a pretty messy and difficult job. I rather build a PC from scratch!!

This is a common problem that we ( in the camera repair game ) see a lot . The cause is faulty CCD sensor ( see enclosed pic from a Canon camera ) to see what I mean . Canon will repair this ( or replace the camera if they cannot repair it inside 4 weeks ) free of charge. Why does this happen ? Badly manufactured ( produced in 2002-2004 run ) sensor goes in the camera and starts outputting noise after 1 or 2 years instead of working properly for +- 10 years.

for the person whose screen is blank but the photos work- I had the same problem and solved it by replacing the smaller date/time battery which slides out of the larger battery copartment. The battery is a CR1220 smaller than a dime and even flatter. Hope this works for you.

Remove the SD card from the camera. Slide the tiny switch on the side of the card to its other "unlocked" position. Reinsert the card in the camera. But if you've already tried this, see this link for additional things that you can try.

SOURCE: No Display on Canon S3 LCD
Mine was the "optical assembly"
I wrote Canon's president pointing out all these postings about this issue and how the other earlier Powershots and A models had this issue and were part of service recalls. I compared Canon to Toyota, hoping it wasn't aware of the problem despite all the online chatter. I also said I was sad I could no longer recommend buying high end Canon photo or video products to organizations any more all over them not wanting to do a $130 repair on a widely publicized issue.
Outcome. I heard promptly from a Canon rep. They paid for speed shipping to Chicago service center. I had it back in 3 days, fixed for free. The repair sheet says "the optical assembly did not operate propoerly causing no image output... it was replaced..."

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:
