Question about GE Refrigerators

Open Question

Need help to unclog a drain on a GE Profile Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Model PFSS6PKW/PFSF6PKW. Specifically, where does the drain end? Behind the freezer & how to access it? Also how to fix rust

Also the top of my drain pan underneath the coils on the inside back wall had a metallic type tape over it that has eroded. It this tape necessary? If so, where do I get more to replace it? There is also quite a bit of rust stains near the drain area & around it. What is best to clean that off? I want to do whatever possible while I have the back panel off to clean it up. Would like to clean out the area where the drain ends (behind freezer, I guess?) if someone can tell me how to access that area. Unit was making slabs of ice under the deli tray while also draining water onto the floor on both sides of fridge. Had repairman come to home for $70. Said was clogged drain which I already knew from my own research. Now I am attempting to unclog it myself as he was going to charge $300 more to remove the back panel to run a snake and unclog it and they weren't going to schedule it for 2 more weeks. So, I have gotten the back panel off inside the fridge, located top of the drain where the hole is near the middle of pan. Steamed about 3 cups of water and used a turkey baster to feed it into the drain hole opening. I don't have a snake or tubing that would fit so I took some weed trimmer line and fed it down thru the drain about three feet length twice. Is that long enough? Where is this drain ending? I would like to check and clean that area if I can find out how to access it? And any help on what to do about the eroding tape on the drain pan and the rust removal? I bought this unit in Feb 2008. And it started having the icing and leaking water issue in fall of 2011. I would unplug & defrost it before as I couldn't find a drain pan on this unit till now but this is first time I took inside panel off and hope to fix it for a good while. I'm a female homeowner who can follow directions. If you can direct me to diagrams that would be helpful. Thank you.

SOURCE: Hi GE top freezer fridge - 5 years old( no ice

Well for one thing that unit was manufactured 10 years ago. But it sounds like the defrost drain is clogged and the water is running down the inside of the unit. The evaporator (not condenser) is on the bottom of the freezer compartment. The bottom panel of the freezer comes out. They are a bit of a pain to do, but can be done.

Clean the drain pan and drain line in the back of the freezer section behind the cover underneath the evaporator coil. (hint: use turkey baster with hot water) Make sure water drains when you pour it in. If it doesn't - also clean drain tube on the back of the unit behind the cover. When done - put the tube exactly where it was.
Good luck! :)

SOURCE: Water flowing into refrigerator.

hello again,
part 2 of the answer, the metal pan is the drain in the center of it is where the drain is blocked, the foam vents are the vents where the air from the freezer flows into the fresh food compartment,GENTLYclear that small hole so as not to puncture the tubing in the coil above it,or you will loose all the refrigerant(freon) an dthe ref, will be dead

The drain in the freezer behind back lower panel
needs opening. You can see it at the bottom of the back panel
underneath the evaporator coils. (The cold coils)
Run Hot water in the drain until it clears or use a hairdryer.
When the defrost melts the water it goes down the drain
If the drain is clogged with Ice or ? The defrost water

You should be able to see where the drain tube comes out over the drain pan. Get some thin wire and run it down the tube and when it comes out in the drain pain, tie something onto it like a small piece of cloth and pull it back up through the drain tube to swab it out. The tape is no big issue, if you want to do something about the rust, there is a product that autoparts stores sell that turns rust into a hard, rigid metal. Or you can use a blow drier to make sure it is dried out and then spray rubber under coating on it.

Pfss6pkw drain plugged

Unplug your refrigerator and remove items and shelves from the fresh food section. Not sure about what nutdriver so try a 1/4 inch nutdriver first and remove the screws holding panel number 98 in this photo HERE The beginning of the drain hole for the fresh food section is below the evaporator and in the center bottom of location number 96 in that same photo HERE For the freezer drain it will be behind panel 47 in this photo HERE You will only need the to remove the fresh food section panel ocation 98 and the freezer panel location 47 to clean these two drains. I have a video from You-Tube that shows where to clean out but his refrigerator had the drain visible without removel of these two panels. In most cases the drain cannot be seen without removal of the panels. I am here should you have questions Thanks Sea Breeze

You will need to remove the rear freezer wall I have a collection of photos I wish were mine but I do link them to their owners. So Follow me back to Sea Breeze Tip's and scroll to bottom of page where there are many ways people attempt a unclog the freezer drain. Sometimes it is slime build up that starts the cycle and sometimes the refrigerator is leaning a little enough to allow the water to pool on one side and creep as a frozen pool until the drains completely shut, One moment as I get the links Sea Breeze
