SOURCE: Document feeder jam
if you open the cover where you feed in the documents to be copied, look on the back side of that cover and you should see a little black plastic piece that dangles from the cover. Make sure first of all that is is there, and it moves freely. This makes contact with a sensor when the cover is closed. And of course make sure the cover is closed tightly. Let me know if I can be of any further help.

SOURCE: Jam in the document feeder
I think I found my answer. You don't have to un do any screws. Lift up the cover to the automatic feeder. You will see a spring on the side of the mechanism towards the front; remove the spring; that will allow you to lift up the little arm the spring was attached to and remove the roller or bar and the light blue/green plate just under it. Then you will be able to see the jammed paper, which which I was able to carefully pull out with a pair of tweezers. Some was under rubber rollers, but when I pulled the paper sideways it slipped out. Now it works!

One way to unjam that would be to take a stiffer plastic or manila folder and insert it slowly into the document feeder and the slowly push it through the feeder until you dislodge the jammed document out of the bottom of the feeder.
That is a common practice in removing jams in the feeder.

Tips for a great answer:
Dec 26, 2014 | Office Equipment & Supplies
Jan 13, 2012 | HP Scanjet 5590 Flatbed Scanner
You can specify the method for restarting scanning of documents when a paper jam occurs in the feeder.
For information on the optional products required to use this function, see "Optional Products Required for Each Function."
Details of each item are shown below.
[From 1st Page]: If a paper jam occurs in the feeder, scanning starts again from the first page of the document. [From Stopped Original]: If a paper jam occurs in the feeder, scanning starts again from the page of the document scanning was interrupted.
