Hi,
I'm Neil and glad to be at your service!
First you always need to wipe out any large spills or hunks of food before self cleaning or you will get smoke and sometimes a little fire inside! The manual will tell you this. You can get a new manual online at the web site for your brad range!
It will not harm anything but may be uncomfortable in your home!

This time you need to call service!

yes, you need to open the panel (in the center of the front of the oven when you open the door on the top) and press the reset button, there is a site that gives step by step instructions, but i can no longer find it

SOURCE: Oven will not heat

Heating elements are protected by a fusable link that is a one time fuse that is meant to protect the stove from overheating. It sounds like the elements need to be replaced

SOURCE: Dacor dual fuel range (ERD36SBK):

It could be the oven ignitor which is located under the heat displacement shield if you have a voltage meter or a multimeter do an ampere test should first shut the gas off next locate the oven ignitor or bake ignitor and you will see two wires that go to the ignitor clip around one of the wires should be reading 3-3.3 amps any less then this and the oven will not light even if it read 2.9 it would still be a weak ignitor and need to be replaced because it would not be lighting the gas when it was supposed to check your oven ignitor and message me back with your finds And please remember when our chat is concluded to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation Thanks again and Happy New Year

Hotpoint oven won't heat above 250 degrees broiler works fine as well as the stove top

either its the oven sensor rod located at the top of the ovens cavity,or your bake element could be getting a hot spot which is when it gets a discolored spot in the element and can no longer pass sufficient current to heat the oven past 250 degrees

Oven was heating and we got HEAVY smoke....

Nothing in the elements, thermostat thermocouples are gas filled, sensors have wiring inside, nothing in the liner or insulation. You said this was a stove, and some stoves have a vent that goes up through one of the burners on the top. If you had oil splatter or drip into this it can get into your oven. We do know that some blower fans on convection ovens have a sealed oil bearing, but there would be very little oil coming out of this (drops) and you will notice your fan getting noisier or running slower in the near future. I believe it is supposed to be. Prebake, including the convection fan, will happen until the oven reaches the set temperature.
